I recently assembled some Billy shelves and noticed that some of the shelves don’t fit exactly into the designated grooves – they are either too loose or very difficult to slide in. My question is: why do some Billy shelves not fit precisely? I’m not just referring to slight tolerances, but significant deviations that can make assembly difficult or unstable. Are these due to manufacturing inconsistencies, different materials, or common mistakes during assembly? Has anyone else had similar experiences, and what could be the specific reasons for this?
I think the discussion here goes into good detail, but it often assumes that manufacturing tolerances are automatically to blame. What about IKEA’s quality control? They are generally quite reliable.
I rather suspect that the main issue lies in practical handling: during packaging, transport, and unpacking, small damages or slight deformations can occur. You’re not explicitly referring to that, are you?
That’s exactly what I mean. But who checks the shelf for such issues immediately after purchase? In my opinion, the assembly instructions are often too brief to convey such details.
Has anyone here ever tried to file a complaint with IKEA over shelves that didn’t fit properly? What were your experiences?

I usually stay calm with issues like shelf boards: a bit of sandpaper, some patience and calm – and the boards fit without panic. A tip from me: just take it easy and see the whole thing as a bit of a DIY fun project.
Exactly! 🙂
