ᐅ Why do some connectors come loose in BILLY shelving units?

I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: Why do the connectors in some Billy bookcases seem to come loose over time, especially the dowels and screws that hold the shelves and side panels together? I have noticed that even with proper assembly and normal use, the stability of some shelves decreases because the fasteners loosen or even partially fall out. Is this due to the quality of the materials, poor installation, or could there be mechanical or physical reasons, such as fluctuations in humidity or weight load?

Material properties and installation are crucial

I agree. Another important point: Don’t skip using wood glue, as it provides extra strength.

the regular retightening of the connection screws

That makes sense. Is there a recommended interval for retightening? Or is it sufficient to do it based on how it feels? And can retightening too often cause problems itself? Thanks in advance for your input!

In general, I recommend checking the screws twice a year and retightening them if necessary.

Retightening too often is not a major risk, as long as excessive force is avoided. Screws should only be tightened enough to secure them without crushing the material or damaging the threads.

If the shelf is frequently moved or heavily loaded, more frequent checks may be advisable. This helps prevent the connection from loosening over time and compromising stability.
