Hello everyone,

I noticed that the hinges on some of the doors of my BILLY shelves regularly squeak, especially when the doors are moved. The noises are rather annoying and almost typical for furniture that has been used for a while. I am particularly interested in why certain BILLY hinges squeak—is it due to the design or the material—and, most importantly, how to best resolve this issue without having to replace the hinges entirely.

Is it enough to lubricate the hinges regularly, or are other measures more effective? What kinds of lubricants are suitable, and what should be avoided to prevent damaging the mechanism?

Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

Squeaking in BILLY hinges is usually caused by insufficient lubrication of the metal parts. The standard BILLY hinges are mostly made of galvanized steel or other untreated metals, which tend to rub against each other over time.

It is recommended to use a thin liquid lubricant such as silicone spray or a special furniture oil, as these do not leave dirt-attracting residues. Important: WD-40 or similar multi-purpose oils may provide short-term relief but can attract dust and worsen the lubrication over time.

The procedure is simple: open the door, spray or oil the hinge in the middle, then open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant evenly. Regular application, for example every 6 months, prevents squeaking in the long run.

Additionally, loose screws can cause noise, so it is advisable to check that all screws are still tight before applying lubricant.

To explain it a bit more precisely:

When metal parts rub against each other and are dry, friction occurs, which causes the typical squeaking. Those who have experienced this know that the key is proper maintenance.

It’s best to use a fine brush or a spray can with silicone spray so that the lubricant really reaches the joints. Some also recommend graphite powder, but that is more suitable for locks and not ideal for furniture.

Oiling is the most effective and quickest method. However, the type of oil is important—you should avoid thick or sticky substances. Also, after lubricating, the door should be moved several times to distribute everything evenly.

You should also check whether the hinges are bent or damaged. In that case, replacement is the only solution. But usually, simple lubrication is sufficient!

I find it interesting that squeaking is almost always attributed to a lack of lubrication.

But can this really be said as a general rule, without considering other possible causes? In my experience, material fatigue and manufacturing tolerances can also be factors. Especially with BILLY shelves, which are produced quite cost-effectively, small deviations in the hinge alignment or even minimal metal deformation can lead to irregularities.

That’s an important point. But how often do users actually check this? I think that most of the time the cause is either misdiagnosed or only superficially addressed.

So my question to the experienced users here is: Are there signs indicating when lubrication is no longer sufficient and a hinge replacement becomes truly necessary? And are there perhaps compatible replacement parts of better quality that don’t require rebuilding the entire shelf?

Hello everyone,

to address the recent points, I would like to summarize the key aspects:

The squeaking usually occurs due to insufficient lubrication of the metal parts in the hinge. Regular opening and closing causes friction and noise, especially when dry.

This is mainly the case when the hinges show visible damage – bent, cracked, or worn out. Also, if the door no longer holds properly or is difficult to adjust.

Regarding replacement parts: IKEA itself offers replacement hinges, which are identical to the originals. However, there are also third-party suppliers offering higher-quality hinges, e.g., with better coatings to reduce wear and ensure noise-free movement.

For a simple repair:
- Tighten screws
- Use silicone spray or furniture oil
- Open and close the door several times

This will usually resolve most issues quickly.
