Hello everyone, I have a specific question that has been on my mind for some time: Why do some doors of the IKEA Billy bookshelf squeak, and only in cold weather? I mean that the doors work completely silently in summer or warmer rooms, but as soon as it gets colder outside, they start to squeak. I have noticed that it might be related to the material or possibly humidity, but I am not sure. Is there anyone here who can explain this from a technical point of view or has had similar experiences? I am especially interested in whether the problem is related to the construction of the Billy doors, such as material stresses or lubricants that change with cold temperatures. Thanks in advance for your insights!
One more thought: Squeaking can also be caused by small irregularities or wear on the hinge pins. Especially if the furniture is several years old, microcorrosion can build up – this changes the friction conditions.
I completely agree with that. It’s best to remove the hinges completely, clean them thoroughly, and then lubricate them again. Have you already checked whether the hinges have any play or move easily? That can also affect the noise.

Unscrew the hinges, clean them, spray with WD-40 or silicone spray, and reassemble.

What often helps with BILLY doors: Check if the door is properly aligned. If it is slightly crooked or fits too tightly, it increases friction and therefore noise. Make sure the screws are still tight and that the door moves smoothly when opening and closing. Adjusting and lubricating is usually the solution.
