Hello everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA BILLY shelves: the doors squeak quite unpleasantly when opening and closing. I have been using the shelves for some time, but only recently installed the doors. The hinges are correctly fitted, yet this annoying noise still occurs.
My question is: how can I effectively prevent the BILLY doors from squeaking when opening? What steps can I take without compromising functionality or risking damage to the doors? Are there any specific lubricants or maintenance tips you would recommend?
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

I would like to add a brief step-by-step guide here that has proven effective in practice:
1. Open the door and use a dry cloth to remove visible dirt from the hinges.
2. Use a brush to dust out the gaps in the hinges.
3. Apply silicone spray sparingly directly onto the hinge joints.
4. Open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant.
5. Check for noise and repeat the process if necessary.
Important: Never use too much lubricant, as leaking or sticking can cause unsightly stains.

Open and close the door several times to spread the lubricant.Thank you for the detailed instructions, that helps a lot! One last question: Are there any products specifically recommended for plastic or metal parts of hinges on furniture like the Billy shelf? I have read that some substances can damage plastic.

Are there products specifically recommended for plastic or metal parts of hinges?Yes, silicone sprays are generally the best choice because they are safe for both plastic and metal and do not damage any materials. They are also resistant to aging and do not leave a sticky residue.
Conventional lubricating oils can cause shrinkage or brittleness in some plastics. Therefore, it is advisable to check the product’s datasheet or test on inconspicuous areas.

I have read that some agents can attack plastics. That is correct, especially the solvents contained in some variants of WD-40 can cause certain weakening effects on plastic with prolonged contact.
Therefore, I generally recommend silicone spray specifically designed for plastics. These create a lubricating film base that remains flexible and does not cause any reactions.
Good afternoon, I would like to add an aspect that is sometimes overlooked: damage to the hinge barrels or the small metal pins that form the pivot axis.
If these are slightly bent or worn, it will inevitably cause squeaking noises, even when lubricated.
You can check this by removing the door, disassembling the hinge, and then inspecting the parts. Replacing the damaged components may then help.

I experienced similar issues with my BILLY shelves and was able to manage them through regular maintenance.
My approach:
- Wipe the hinges thoroughly every 6 months
- Then apply a thin, light silicone oil that absorbs well
- Open and close the doors several times
It is important to clean very carefully before lubricating, as dirt particles can remain in the lubricant and cause squeaking in the long run.
