ᐅ Billy Regal squeaks when opening – what can I do?

Hello everyone,

I have a Billy bookshelf from IKEA that has been making quite an annoying squeaking noise when opening the doors for some time now. The sound occurs especially when the doors are not fully aligned or when I open them quickly. The hinges seem to be intact, and there is no visible rust, but the bookshelf is already several years old.

Does anyone have experience with what exactly causes this squeaking? Is it usually due to the hinge, the plastic bushings, or moisture? And most importantly: what medium- to long-term solutions are available to permanently fix the squeaking? I would prefer not to replace the hinges completely, but rather try maintenance or care first.

I would really appreciate any tips!

Hello makin,

I just wanted to encourage you to take the step! I had similar problems with my Billy door. What I underestimated at first was the difference between a hinge just squeaking and one that becomes stiff and eventually won’t move at all.

Cleaning and lubricating helped me quickly before I even considered replacing the bushings. I’ll also share this: you need a bit of patience until everything has “worn in” again and the squeaking is gone.

And if replacing the bushings does become necessary, it’s really manageable with a little calm and care. 🙂 Good luck!

Hello everyone,

I’d like to briefly add what “proper maintenance” means for Billy hinges, so that everyone reading here gets a clear understanding:

1. Daily use and small dirt build-ups significantly reduce the lifespan of the bushings, so regular cleaning of the hinges is advisable, even if they haven’t made any noise for a while.

2. I always recommend relieving the shelf as much as possible when lubricating; that means removing the door and then treating the hinge. This prevents moisture or dirt from being trapped inside the hinge.

3. The right product is a silicone-based spray, not grease or oil.

Common mistakes often made:
- Sometimes the wrong spray is used, which can damage plastic parts.
- Screws are not checked, although a loose screw can cause squeaking.

Conclusion: If you clean regularly, monitor small wear parts, and spray correctly, you can use Billy shelves for a long time without problems.

@makin: I hope it works out quickly for you, and please keep us updated!

Hello everyone,

I’m checking in again with an update:

Last night, I carefully removed the door and took a closer look at the hinges – the bushings were indeed slightly brittle, and I noticed a small crack. I then treated the hinges with silicone spray before reattaching the door.

First impression: the squeaking has reduced significantly, it’s not completely gone, but I will order replacement bushings today and swap them out to ensure long-term quietness.

Thanks for your tips, they were very helpful! 🙂

It’s great that you followed the recommendation. Especially with cracks in plastic, the question remains whether the damage might worsen over time with everyday use.

My advice would be to check the shelf more frequently after replacing the bushings, paying attention to any new noises or changes.

I appreciate that you are carefully addressing the condition and not just applying lubricant superficially.

Hello makin,

thanks for the update!

Next time, I would recommend definitely installing replacement bushings. It’s a relatively minor modification that often pays off in terms of noise reduction. I have seen several cases where people wanted to replace the entire hinge, even though simply changing the bushings would have been enough.

If the bushings are replaceable, this is an easy way to get the Billy shelf back in good shape—relatively inexpensive and with little time required.

Wishing you continued success!

Very good, that sounds like a well-thought-out approach! As mentioned, I would observe the noise over the next few days. Often, it settles down with lubrication and movement.

If it doesn’t disappear completely, please replace the bushings. Here’s a small tip: after installing the new bushings, apply some silicone spray – this reduces friction and helps them last longer.

Feel free to share how the replacement went – this benefits you and other users in the forum the most. Good luck with the next steps!
