Hello everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA BILLY shelves: the doors squeak quite unpleasantly when opening and closing. I have been using the shelves for some time, but only recently installed the doors. The hinges are correctly fitted, yet this annoying noise still occurs.

My question is: how can I effectively prevent the BILLY doors from squeaking when opening? What steps can I take without compromising functionality or risking damage to the doors? Are there any specific lubricants or maintenance tips you would recommend?

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Recommendation of silicone spray or lithium grease.

I think lithium grease is a bit over the top for simple furniture; it’s more suitable for heavy machinery and creates excessive lubricant layers that can attract dust.

Basically, a squeaky hinge is a learning opportunity: it’s better to clean it regularly than to apply excessive grease.

And honestly – in the end, BILLY doors aren’t high-end craftsmanship, so you shouldn’t expect too much when it comes to silent opening. A little re-lubrication is just part of it.

Interesting point, that is partly true. However, I still think it is important to increase durability and comfort.

Your tips have helped me a lot. I will first clean and then carefully lubricate with silicone spray. Thanks to everyone for the detailed responses!
