ᐅ Why do screws come loose in BILLY despite being tightened?

Hello everyone,

The screws on my Billy bookcase keep coming loose, even though I have carefully tightened them several times with a screwdriver. It’s the standard IKEA shelf that many people probably know. I don’t understand why the screws loosen despite applying enough torque, which makes the shelf unstable. The screws don’t become completely loose, but they noticeably lose tightness over time and need constant retightening.

What could be causing this? Does anyone have experience whether it’s due to the material quality, assembly errors, vibrations, or other factors? Maybe you can explain the reason and also give some advice on how to fix this permanently without having to completely rebuild the shelf.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Bulera,

I can fully understand your situation. It is indeed the case that chipboard panels can expand or contract slightly under changing climatic conditions. This can create shear forces on the screws, causing them to loosen.

At the same time, screw locking methods, as already mentioned, such as small washers or self-locking screws, can help.

If this problem occurs frequently, it might also help to secure the shelf to the wall. Angle brackets from a hardware store are inexpensive and provide much more stability.

Fingers crossed for you!

How much should be applied approximately? Should you just apply it to the screw thread and then tighten it, or is there something else to consider?

That is exactly right. A thin layer on the screw thread is enough. Applying too much can even be counterproductive, as the material may not bond properly.

Make sure the screw is clean and dry before application. Then screw it in—tight enough, but not forced. This effectively prevents premature loosening.

As an additional note, I would like to mention that the BILLY shelves are generally designed for light to medium loads. If the shelf is heavily loaded or loaded on one side only, the stress on the screws increases.

In such cases, it is advisable to reduce the load or provide additional support for the shelf.

Also, it is important to avoid repeatedly unscrewing and re-screwing the screws, as this can cause the wood threads to wear out.

If screws loosen despite tightening, you can try replacing them with slightly thicker screws that have the appropriate thread.

It has also proven effective to reinforce the holes with wooden dowels before screwing in the screws. This provides better grip in the wood.

Vibrations caused by creaking floors or nearby machinery can loosen screws.

Also check if the screws are properly straight when driven in.

Secure screws using thread-locking adhesive.
