ᐅ Why do Malm drawers often get stuck?

Hello everyone,

I have been experiencing an issue for some time now where the drawers of my IKEA Malm dresser often stick. By "stick," I mean that they no longer open and close smoothly and easily but tend to catch quickly or become difficult to operate. I am interested in understanding the exact causes. Are there common reasons such as incorrect assembly, material deformation, or possible problems with the drawer slides?

I bought the dresser about 2 years ago, and it is placed on a very level surface. I use the drawers normally, without any excessive load. Still, they are increasingly sticking.

Perhaps someone here has good knowledge about this and can also explain what to pay attention to during assembly or maintenance to prevent the sticking? Thanks in advance for your detailed advice!

Is it possible to simply buy and replace faulty drawer slides for Malm without having to replace the entire chest of drawers?

Yes, that is possible. IKEA itself sells replacement parts for many of their products, including the Malm series.

There are also third-party suppliers that offer drawer slides which can be of better quality and compatible.

Important when choosing replacement parts:
- Check the exact dimensions (length, width, mounting points)
- Consider the load capacity

If you decide to go with third-party options, drawer slides with ball bearings are recommended, as they tend to be much more durable and quieter than the original slides.

Update from me:

Last night, I completely removed and cleaned the drawer slides. I actually found a twisted plastic roller in one of the drawers that was causing it to jam. After cleaning and slight adjustments, it now runs much more smoothly.

The slides were mostly clean, but I applied silicone spray that is compatible with plastic, as recommended.

All screws were tight, and no warping was detected.

Thanks to everyone who shared their expertise in such detail!

If necessary, I will order replacement parts from IKEA. It doesn’t look too bad yet.

If it gets stuck again, I will keep at it 🙂

Glad you were able to solve the problem.

I can add: If you need help in the future, it’s worth occasionally removing the drawers completely and cleaning the runners to prevent dust or small debris from settling and causing jamming.

For me, the actual clamping has always been a matter of extension quality and material tension.

Listen to the material and maintain the guide rails regularly. If they creak or stick, cleaning and lubrication usually help.

In extreme cases, upgrading to higher-quality extensions is also worthwhile.
