abdellenHello everyone, I hope someone here is familiar with the issue I’m having with my Ikea METOD kitchen cabinet doors. There is an unpleasant squeaking noise that occurs whenever I open or close the doors. I’ve noticed that the sound mostly comes from the hinges, which are specifically designed for this system. I’m interested to know if other users have experienced the same problem and if there is a permanent solution beyond just tightening the screws. Is this a known quality issue or more of an installation problem? Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

It is an unpleasant squeaking noise that occurs whenever I open or close the doors. This describes a common issue with many Metod hinges, although it remains unclear whether all affected systems are equally susceptible. My question would be whether you have checked the manufacturer’s recommendations for lubrication and what kind of stress the doors are subjected to. Sometimes small material defects or imprecise installation can also cause the squeaking. However, I could not find any evidence of quality issues in official Ikea forums, which points more toward an individual installation situation.

whether you have checked the manufacturer’s recommendations for lubrication and what kind of stress the doors are subjected to.The METOD hinges installed by Ikea come factory-lubricated with a thin layer of lubricant. In practice, this often does not last permanently because everyday conditions involving friction and dust quickly reduce its effect. Suggested solutions include:
- Using a dry PTFE spray for reconditioning
- Avoiding oily lubricants, as they attract dust
- Regular cleaning and slight readjustment of the hinges
This is not a general quality issue but a technical side effect that can be minimized with proper maintenance.
I would like to add that the cause of this squeaking often lies in the precise fitting of the hinges. If the doors do not sit exactly within the frame, friction increases, which leads to the noise. Sometimes it helps to slightly loosen the hinge screws, realign the door, and then retighten them.
If the problem persists despite correct installation and lubrication, tiny plastic bushings within the hinges might be damaged or worn out. In this case, replacing the hinges could resolve the issue.

If the problem persists despite correct assembly and lubrication, tiny plastic bushings in the hinges may be damaged or worn. That is a very interesting point. I handled the doors quite carefully during the initial assembly and did not notice any major installation errors. The plastic parts appeared intact, but I did not specifically look for signs of wear. Is there an easy way to check these plastic bushings or to replace them as a test? I would prefer not to replace the hinges unless a small adjustment is enough.

Is there a simple way to check or temporarily replace these plastic bushings? The plastic bushings are integrated into the hinge and are not available as individually replaceable parts. A visual inspection can be done by unscrewing the hinge and looking for cracks, deformations, or wear particles. To address the issue, it is recommended to either replace the entire hinge or apply a high-quality, dry lubricant to temporarily compensate for wear.
In the long term, the most sustainable solution is to replace the complete hinges, as this not only eliminates squeaking but also ensures the proper functionality of the door system.
