Lisivette20 Nov 2016 17:07Hello everyone,
I recently purchased the Ikea Brimnes bedroom set and am now facing the challenge of assembling it as smoothly as possible. Although the instructions are clear, some details during assembly or when choosing the right screws don’t seem entirely straightforward. I wanted to ask if anyone has tips or proven methods for assembling the BRIMNES system?
My goal is to complete the build efficiently and safely, without damaging any parts or ending up with something unstable. Are there any tools that are highly recommended, or general tricks to keep in mind when working with Ikea furniture? Maybe also some experience handling the more delicate parts of the set?
Thanks in advance for your detailed advice!

Hey Lisivette!
Great that you have the BRIMNES, it’s really a fantastic set! 😊 I can share some really useful tips that will make assembly much easier for you:
- Make sure to take plenty of time and sort all the parts beforehand; this will save you a lot of hassle!
- A cordless drill with adjustable torque is invaluable—it helps prevent over-tightening and damaged screws.
- At first, just tighten all screws lightly, then fully tighten everything at the end.
- Sometimes small wooden dowels are easier to insert if you rub them with a bit of wax or soap beforehand.
I’ve assembled this set twice already and always found it really straightforward! If you run into any issues, just let me know here—I’m happy to help! You’ve got this!!!

Hello Lisivette,
to explore the topic a bit more deeply: Assembling the Ikea BRIMNES furniture system requires some patience, especially because the metal drawer slides need to be fitted precisely to avoid problems with opening and closing later on.
I recommend the following steps in advance:
- Unpack all parts and check for completeness.
- Carefully read the included instructions and understand the purpose of each assembly step.
- Prepare tools: a small screwdriver for fine screws, a cordless drill with torque setting, and if needed, a rubber mallet.
- Be particularly careful with the slotted screws, as they are designed to allow small adjustments. If you tighten these screws too much, the material can warp.
I would also like to ask: Will you be using fabric boxes inside the drawers or heavier items? This can provide guidance for stability planning and potential reinforcement.
For assembling the back panel, I recommend tightening the screws last, as this makes small adjustments to the main frame easier. When mounting the drawer slides, make sure they are exactly parallel on both sides, otherwise the drawers will rub and get stuck.
If you like, I can also provide you with a detailed step-by-step guide to avoid the most common mistakes. Let me know!

Since the instructions are clear but some details during assembly or when choosing the correct screws are not entirely obviousAn important point with the BRIMNES is that all included screws have specific purposes. My recommendation:
- Use the screws exactly as specified in the instructions; otherwise, the attachment points could be damaged.
- Before starting assembly, it is advisable to sort all screws by type and check that none are missing.
- For the stability of the frame, do not tighten the screws for the corner joints too much to avoid material deformation.
- It is best to work with a partner since some parts are quite large and this will make securing other components easier.
Additionally, I recommend using a Phillips screwdriver size PH2 as well as a cordless drill with adjustable torque. This reduces the risk of damaging the material.
You should also prepare the assembly area beforehand: make sure there is enough space, a clean and level surface, and good lighting.
Creating a fastening plan before actually screwing can help prevent mistakes.

Take plenty of time and prepare all the parts sorted in advance; it will save you a lot of hassle! This is absolutely true – I was very frustrated at the beginning because I worked without any order. It helps if you organize the parts systematically beforehand and quickly check progress when in doubt.

I’d also like to ask: Are you planning to use fabric boxes or heavier items in the drawers?I don’t know if you want to answer this yet, but I want to encourage you: When I filled the BRIMNES with fabric boxes, it was easier to handle and I hardly had any load-related problems. At first, I was also afraid of doing something wrong.
My tip is to take breaks when you get stuck – don’t put yourself under pressure! Ikea furniture can be challenging, but with patience you can usually manage. If you specify exactly where you’re having trouble, we can help you more effectively.
Fingers crossed – you’ll do great!
