Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Hemnes bed from Ikea and now want to carefully treat it with wood oil to protect the surface in the long term and maintain the typical Hemnes character. My question is: Which wood oil works best for the Hemnes surface, meaning pine wood with its specific treatment? It is important to me that the oil penetrates well, provides a natural look without too much shine, and is as low in harmful substances as possible since the bed is in the bedroom.

Has anyone had experience with certain brands or oils (e.g., linseed oil, hardwax oil, tung oil) on Ikea Hemnes furniture? Are there any special considerations to keep in mind, such as surface preparation or specific application techniques?

I look forward to your recommendations and tips!

Hello Valentin69,

I think your approach is excellent, especially when it comes to Ikea furniture made of pine wood like the Hemnes series, where choosing the right wood oil can make the difference between a beautiful, long-lasting protection and a disappointing finish.

Regarding your question: For Hemnes, I usually recommend a high-quality hardwax oil, as it protects the surface well, repels water, and remains breathable. Linseed oil penetrates deeply but often dries slowly and can darken the wood. Tung oil is very durable but typically requires several coats and some patience during drying.

Personally, I use fine sandpaper (grit 220 or finer) to lightly roughen the surface for preparation. Then I apply the oil thinly and evenly with a lint-free cloth, letting it soak in for 15-20 minutes before wiping off any excess. Multiple thin layers provide the best protection.

A particularly important point: always test on an inconspicuous area first to see if the desired color tone is achieved. Many wood oils tend to darken the wood somewhat.

I hope this helps you! If you like, I can also recommend specific products that I find effective.

I completely agree with Jeanbar – hardwax oil is the real winner here! 😎 Especially for a bedroom, this natural protection is perfect because it doesn’t become too glossy and doesn’t release any chemical residue.

I treated my Hemnes cabinets with an organic hardwax oil and I’m really happy with it. It has low odor, is easy to apply, and feels great. Pro tip: multiple thin layers work better than one thick layer – otherwise, the oil stays on the surface and doesn’t dry properly.

By the way, I tried linseed oil myself, but it was too sticky and took forever to dry – not ideal for a bedroom.

So, for you: go for the wax oil upgrade on your Hemnes and enjoy the natural look!

Exactly. Hard wax oil, preferably clear, because it barely changes the Hemnes look. Linseed oil becomes sticky quickly, tung oil takes too long.

Lightly sand beforehand, then apply thinly and remove any excess oil. Done.

I would like to add that with Ikea Hemnes – due to the usually lightly pre-oiled or glazed wood – it is important to carefully check the condition before applying oil. The oil will penetrate best only when the surface is clean and slightly roughened.

A hardwax oil based on plant oils with a low solvent content is particularly recommended, ideally certified for use in living spaces. These provide the best possible protection against moisture without overloading or thickening the wood in the bedroom.

The application time is also important: after applying, the oil should be left to soak in undisturbed for at least 20 minutes, then all excess residue should be wiped off with a soft cloth. This prevents a sticky surface.

If you prefer a matte look, products without added gloss agents are advisable. For the Hemnes, I clearly recommend something like Osmo Hardwax Oil Natural or similar products that consistently perform well in tests.

If you want to know more about the preparation or need information on other types of wood, just ask.
