Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble several PLATSA units from IKEA and am looking into the question: Which types of screws used in IKEA PLATSA are particularly durable and reliable?

I am especially interested in whether there are differences in the quality of screws used for connecting cam locks, metal screws, or wood screws, for example.

Which screws hold up best under stress, especially considering frequent rearranging or minor changes to the configuration?

Do you have experience with specific screw types that are especially robust, or perhaps tips on which screws might be worth replacing with better alternatives?

Thank you very much for your detailed answers and suggestions!

The types of screws used in IKEA PLATSA typically consist of the following components:

- Metal screws (usually zinc-plated or galvanized) for load-bearing connections
- Wood screws for handles or assembly on particleboard
- Cam lock screws that additionally secure the connections

In terms of durability, the zinc-plated metal screws stand out due to their corrosion resistance and strength grade (usually 4.8 to 8.8, depending on the type). Wood screws are generally sturdy but should be handled carefully if frequently disassembled and reassembled, as the threads can wear out in MDF/particleboard material.

If you plan to reassemble the furniture often, it is advisable to pay special attention to the cam lock screws, as these can wear out easily. Replacement parts are available separately from IKEA. For improved durability, metal screws with a higher strength grade or stainless steel screws can be considered.

Hello noplo,

From my experience, the screws that suffer the most are those directly screwed into the wood-based materials – usually the wood screws. Especially with frequent repositioning, the material there can quickly expand or become fatigued.

The metal screws used in PLATSA are well made and can withstand high loads. It is important to assemble slowly and use the correct torque to avoid over-tightening the screws.

Regarding the dowels, it is best to leave them original. Sometimes it makes sense to replace them when repositioning if you notice they are no longer holding firmly.

Otherwise, my recommendation is to closely inspect the screws, especially those going into the wood, and if necessary, replace them with stainless steel screws of equivalent quality.

To properly assess the durability of the screw types used in IKEA PLATSA, I would like to address a few points systematically:

- Where is each type of screw used? Wood screws are primarily intended for connecting chipboard components to back panels or for attaching handles. These should always be screwed in carefully, as chipboard is not as strong as solid wood.

- Metal screws are mostly used for load-bearing connections. It is important to watch out for possible rust formation, especially if the furniture is exposed to moisture over long periods. Since they are usually galvanized, this is hardly an issue indoors.

- Cam locks offer a convenient but wear-prone connection. I recommend avoiding frequent reuse of these if you move the furniture often, and having replacements available.

Typical mistakes include over-tightening screws and frequently unscrewing them, which wears out the threads and reduces stability.

Summary: For long-lasting durability, metal screws should remain in their original condition. For wood screws, you can achieve better hold by using higher-quality screws (e.g., wood screws with deeper threads), especially if you frequently assemble and disassemble the furniture. Cam locks are always a potential weak point.

Metal screws are the most durable. Wood screws should be used sparingly and carefully. Swivel casters have their limits with frequent repositioning – replace them if they become loose.

I completely agree, especially with PLATSA, which offers many modular rearrangements. One reason cam locks lose their grip after several uses is the type of material they engage with: the thin particleboard allows the metal connector only a limited number of insertions and removals before the threads and holding strength deteriorate.

Additionally, the metal screws IKEA typically uses are standard electro-galvanized steel screws with a strength class around 5.8 or higher, which is sufficient and durable for furniture assembly. Replacing these with A2 stainless steel screws can significantly improve durability under load and in humid conditions.

Wood screws are generally the weakest option because the threads expand and contract quickly in particleboard, leading to loosening. A tip: pre-drill and use screws with special threads designed for particleboard, as these put less strain on the material.

In general, it’s important to ensure that the mounting torque is not too high, as excessive torque can deform the fixing points and reduce the screws’ holding power.

In summary, my recommendation is: for maximum durability, invest in high-quality stainless steel screws instead of standard galvanized screws and focus on proper use of cam locks—avoid frequent unscrewing whenever possible.
