Hello everyone,

I am currently working on some minor repairs for my IKEA Hemnes dresser and am looking for the best tools to make this task easier. I am especially interested in which tools have proven effective for the common types of joints, screws, and for repairing the frequently used drawers. It would be great if you could share your experiences regarding whether specific screwdrivers, cordless drills, adhesive techniques, or other aids are particularly helpful. Tips on tools that might not be immediately associated with furniture repairs are also welcome. Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Hello,
for the Hemnes, a Phillips screwdriver and a small hex key (Allen) wrench set are the most important. A cordless drill driver with adjustable torque is also very useful to avoid damaging the wood too much.

Hello Baharen,

First of all, I think it’s great that you want to equip yourself with the right tools before starting repairs. Hemnes furniture typically consists of MDF or solid wood panels, fastened with screws and dowels.

From my experience, you should have the following tools on hand:
- Phillips screwdriver (PH2) for most screws used by IKEA.
- Cordless drill with adjustable torque to drive screws carefully without damaging the wood.
- A set of hex keys (Allen wrenches), since some connectors use hex screws.
- Wood glue (PVAC glue), in case connections have loosened and you want to reinforce them.
- Rubber mallet to gently fit parts together without causing scratches.

When screwing, make sure the screws are neither too tight nor too loose, as this can damage the furniture. If drawer slides stick, a bit of silicone spray usually helps. Do you have specific damages, like chipped wood or cracked joints, that you could describe in more detail? Then I could assist you more precisely.

Thanks, that’s a good idea! My drawers have generally slid more smoothly before, but I hadn’t tried silicone spray yet.

Sometimes the drawers are hard to open, and a few screws on the sides were a bit loose. In addition, one corner of the dresser has a small area where the wood appears to have swollen. Could special tools or materials help restore stability here without having to take the entire dresser apart?

Hello Baharen,

Swollen wood is often caused by moisture. In such cases, the area usually cannot be fully repaired with tools alone, but can be smoothed using appropriate wood fillers and fine sandpaper for finishing.

To tighten the screws, I recommend using a good screwdriver that fits the screws perfectly to avoid rounding off the screw heads. A cordless drill with a low torque setting is also helpful, as already mentioned.

Additionally, for the swelling, you can use a small clamp to hold the parts in place while the glue dries, if you plan to glue anything. This will ensure the repair lasts.

If you describe more precisely how much the drawers are sticking, I can provide further advice on specific drawer aids or sliding rails.

I can fully understand how frustrating it is when you want to repair your beloved Hemnes but don’t have the right tools or useful tips at hand.

In my experience, it helps a lot to be patient and avoid stressing the components – sometimes a gentle approach with hand tools is better than forceful screwing with power tools.

I personally often use a small Phillips screwdriver from the hardware store that fits comfortably in the hand, along with some wood glue, when edges are slightly worn out.

Also, a small file or sanding block is often very useful to smooth sharp edges or slightly damaged wooden parts before continuing the work.

I hope you find the right tools and enjoy the repair!
