Hello everyone,

I recently bought the Malm bed from IKEA and want to assemble it myself. However, I’m unsure which tools I actually need for the assembly. The instructions mainly mention an Allen key, which is already included. Is that sufficient, or should I have other tools like a screwdriver, hammer, or similar ready? I want to carry out the assembly carefully to avoid damaging the materials. Additionally, I’m interested in any practical tips for specific tools that could make the process much easier. I would appreciate a detailed list and any shared experiences!

This is brilliant! 🙂 If you follow the tip about using a rubber mallet, you’ll save yourself a lot of work and avoid possible damage.

I assembled my structure using a cordless drill and Allen wrench, and everything fits perfectly! It’s really enjoyable when you have the right tools on hand and are well prepared.

Also: Always unpack and sort all parts first; this makes the assembly process even smoother. Good luck to you all! :-)

Hello Elsike,

as an addition to the previous tips: if you don’t have a cordless drill, I recommend using a handle extension for the hex key. These usually aren’t included but make screwing much easier.

It’s also helpful not to fully tighten the screws at first, but to align all the parts properly. Then tighten everything to avoid any deformation.

For the wall plugs, it helps to secure them slightly beforehand with masking tape so they don’t slip when assembling.

This is a very important point that I would like to emphasize again. Especially with Malm beds, the individual parts can otherwise be assembled unevenly, which causes problems later on.

In summary: Included Allen key + Phillips screwdriver + rubber mallet + tape measure + optional extended-handle Allen key / cordless drill.

Careful preparation and gradually tightening the screws with caution are essential.
