Hello everyone,
I recently bought the Malm bed from IKEA and want to assemble it myself. However, I’m unsure which tools I actually need for the assembly. The instructions mainly mention an Allen key, which is already included. Is that sufficient, or should I have other tools like a screwdriver, hammer, or similar ready? I want to carry out the assembly carefully to avoid damaging the materials. Additionally, I’m interested in any practical tips for specific tools that could make the process much easier. I would appreciate a detailed list and any shared experiences!

Basically, the included Allen key is sufficient for most of the screws in the MALM.
However, I also recommend having a Phillips screwdriver on hand, as some connections may use Phillips screws, for example, when assembling the drawers. A hammer can also be helpful to gently tap in wooden dowels without damaging the material.
For even more flexibility, you can use a cordless drill with both Allen and Phillips bits. But be careful: applying too much force can damage the screw holes, so work carefully.

A hammer can also be useful for gently tapping wooden dowels into placeThat is correct, but I would like to add that a rubber mallet is better suited for this task. Metal hammers can easily damage the wood.
Additionally, I recommend using a measuring stick or a folding ruler to check dimensions. Precision is especially important when assembling the side panels and the frame to ensure that drawers do not get stuck later.
To protect the floor, a protective cloth or blanket can also be helpful. Although these are not tools, they noticeably make the assembly process easier.
Hello Elsike,
I have assembled MALM beds several times myself and can confirm that most of the necessary tools are often included. However, a good Phillips screwdriver makes the work much easier, especially if the included Allen key is too small or uncomfortable to hold.
It is also helpful to follow the provided instructions carefully and to loosely insert all screws first before tightening them. This helps prevent tension in the structure. A rubber mallet is useful for inserting wooden dowels and prevents injuries or damage to the wood.
Do you have any experience with furniture assembly in general? If not, I can also offer tips on how to proceed systematically to avoid mistakes.

Not strictly necessary, but helpful: cordless screwdriver with hex bits.I completely agree. A cordless screwdriver speeds up the assembly significantly, but you should be careful not to overtighten the screws.
Other than that, just have the included hex key and a Phillips screwdriver ready.
