sulisoHello everyone, I’m planning to assemble an Ikea Hemnes shelf soon and am getting the necessary tools ready. Since Ikea usually provides the required hex keys and screws, I’m wondering which additional tools are truly essential to ensure a smooth and safe assembly process. Specifically, I’m interested in whether anything beyond the small included Allen key is needed, such as a cordless drill, hammer, screwdriver, or any special aids. It would also be great to hear if anyone has practical tips on how to avoid common issues during assembly by using certain tools. Looking forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Based on my experience assembling Hemnes furniture and similar IKEA products, I recommend using a cordless drill with adjustable torque in addition to the included hex key (Allen wrench). In my opinion, this allows for much faster and more controlled work than relying solely on manual effort.
Additionally, a Phillips screwdriver is quite helpful, especially for attaching small mounting plates or back panels. A small hammer is also useful for gently tapping wooden dowels into place without damaging them.
In summary:
- Cordless drill
- Phillips screwdriver
- Small hammer
A bit of patience and good lighting also go a long way.

While a cordless drill can save time, it also carries the risk of overtightening screws or damaging the wood, especially if you are inexperienced. The Hemnes series in particular has some sensitive joints that require careful tightening.
A good manual Allen key is usually more than sufficient. And if you use a power tool at all, it’s better to opt for a basic cordless screwdriver with low torque.

Additionally, a Phillips screwdriver is quite usefulThat’s true. A screwdriver is especially helpful in areas where there is limited space around the screw heads and no room for a power tool.
In general, the tools provided are usually adequate if you take your time and follow the assembly instructions carefully.
Regarding the debate between cordless screwdrivers and hand tools, I would like to add that the quality of the tool is crucial.
A cheap cordless screwdriver without good torque control can quickly cause damage, as the margin between tight enough and too tight is very narrow. As known, Hemnes furniture is mostly made of solid wood, where too much pressure can cause cracks.
Therefore, I recommend:
- sturdy hex keys, possibly in a set with different sizes
- a high-quality cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque, if a power tool is used
- occasionally a small hand hammer to gently tap dowels in place
Furthermore, I suggest inserting screws loosely at first and roughly aligning all parts before tightening them finally. This saves stress and prevents premature strain.
A small spirit level can also help to quickly check if everything is level.

I assembled the last Hemnes bed myself – a bit more relaxed than usual, with an audiobook playing in the background and, of course, regular breaks. The cordless drill was my best friend, but for screws that shouldn’t be too tight, I actually preferred to finish by hand with manual tools.
It also really helps to sort all screws and small parts beforehand, before you start. I also found it quite fun to involve my partner as a "quality inspector" – a nice bonus!
In short: The included tools are enough if you have patience – but a good dose of fun and a favorite extra tool make all the difference.
