Good morning everyone, I am currently planning my first major furniture assembly: putting together an IKEA Hemnes sideboard. I am wondering which tools are truly necessary to assemble this piece efficiently and without unnecessary extras.

I do have the usual Allen key that IKEA provides, but I’m not sure if that is sufficient for all the steps or if it’s better to have additional tools like a cordless drill, screwdriver, hammer, or other items. I’m also curious whether special tools (e.g., a flat-nose plier or Allen keys of different sizes) that are not included in the package would make the process significantly easier, or if it’s better to skip buying them.

If you have experience with the Hemnes: which tools did you actually need, which ones were unnecessary, and what would you recommend for someone assembling this piece for the first time? Thanks in advance for your expertise!

Good question. First, I would question what "really needed" means here. If you only use the standard IKEA hex key set, you will probably be done afterward. But what about quality and saving time?

I often see people thinking they need a lot of tools, but they actually slow themselves down by using the wrong ones. A cordless screwdriver is handy, especially for driving many screws. But not everyone has a good one available.

So: for Hemnes, the included hex key is usually technically sufficient, but if you want to work quickly and comfortably, you should at least have a suitable cordless screwdriver (with torque control!) and a Phillips screwdriver ready. A hammer is only needed for light assembly tasks, such as inserting dowels, if at all.

So, I recently assembled my Hemnes bed. In short: the included tools are actually enough for almost everything.

But honestly, who carries around that tiny Allen key for long? A good, small cordless drill (I have a compact one that even fits in my toolbox) not only makes the job faster but also more enjoyable 😄.

And the hammer? You only need it when applying some extra pressure while setting the wall plugs. But be careful not to damage the wood surface.

What I can really recommend is a socket wrench or a small combination wrench, just in case the nuts are a bit stuck – I needed that once. Other than that: stay calm and don’t overtighten!

Based on my experience with several IKEA furniture pieces, including the Hemnes series, the following can be noted:

- The included Allen key set is technically sufficient for all screw connections.

- A cordless drill with low torque can significantly speed up assembly and prevent excessive effort.

- Phillips screwdrivers (PH2) are useful if unexpected screws are used, although this is rare with Hemnes.

- A hammer is recommended only for driving wooden dowels or making minor adjustments.

- Pliers or special tools are not necessary.

In summary: The supplied Allen key is enough to assemble the IKEA Hemnes. Additional tools are not strictly required but can be helpful to save time and improve comfort during the build.

A brief guide to make assembling the Hemnes as smooth as possible:

1. Prepare your tools:
- The allen key provided by IKEA
- A cordless drill with the appropriate hex bit size (usually 4 mm (0.16 inches))
- A small hammer for wooden dowels (avoid hitting metal parts directly)

2. Avoid common pitfalls:
- Do not overtighten screws, as this can damage the particleboard.
- Gently tap in the dowels to prevent them from splitting.

3. Plan the steps carefully:
- Start screwing by hand to avoid misalignment.

4. Optional:
- A Phillips screwdriver in case any metal brackets need to be attached to the Hemnes.

Conclusion: Besides a borrowed or own cordless drill and the IKEA allen key, no special tools are needed if you work patiently and carefully.

I would like to go into more detail here, as subtle details play an important role, especially with the Hemnes, which I have assembled multiple times:

- Although IKEA provides an Allen key, it is often very small and awkward to handle. I therefore recommend using an ergonomic Allen key or a suitable bit attachment for a cordless drill.

- When using a cordless drill, be sure to set it to a low torque setting to avoid damaging the back panel and the wooden connection parts.

- Hammer: essential for driving in the wooden dowels and occasionally for gently adjusting the furniture parts. I recommend using a small hand hammer with a smooth head.

- Pliers or larger tools are, in my experience, not necessary since the components are manufactured with fairly precise fitting.

- I couldn’t find a single Phillips screw in the Hemnes, so a matching screwdriver is rarely needed.

- Gloves can be helpful during assembly to protect your hands from splintering chipboard edges.

Overall, the supplied Allen key is basic equipment; with the addition of a good cordless drill and hammer, quick and damage-free assembly is hardly hindered.

What about your tool collection, Masunar? Are you flexible with power tools, or do you prefer to work mainly with simple hand tools?
