Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of securely and stably installing the drawers of my Ikea Metod kitchen system. My question is: Which screws are best suited for mounting the Ikea Metod drawers, especially regarding load capacity, screw length, and material quality? I am not only looking for the standard solution with the original screws but am also interested in alternative screws that are recommended due to better durability or easier handling. If anyone has experience with specific types of screws that have proven effective, I would greatly appreciate detailed advice and recommendations. Thanks in advance!

For Ikea Metod drawers, I recommend using 4x30mm (1¼ inch) chipboard screws made of galvanized steel. They are strong enough and suitable for the Euro hole system. Longer screws may cause splitting or damage the material.

Thanks for the tip, Nigel! 👍 I’ve done some experimenting, and my favorites are indeed these 4x30 screws—they provide a strong hold while still being gentle on the wood. It’s also important not to over-torque when using a power tool during assembly—otherwise, the wood quickly shows signs of stress. Looseness? None at all. It also makes installation more pleasant, which is definitely a bonus, right?

In general, it should be noted that Ikea Metod carcasses and drawers come standardized with 5 mm (0.2 inch) Euro-style drill holes. Therefore, the screws should be:
- Suitable for the material (usually particleboard or MDF)
- Corrosion-resistant (ideally zinc-plated or stainless steel)
- 25–30 mm (1–1.2 inches) in length

4 x 30 mm (approximately 5/32 x 1 1/4 inches) particleboard screws offer a good balance between stability and minimizing the risk of material cracks or breakouts. Local guidelines should be observed: avoid placing screws too close to edges to prevent splitting.

Additionally, it is advisable to use screws with pre-drilled holes at critical points if you are purchasing replacement screws. Longer or thicker screws increase the risk of material damage and make later disassembly more difficult.

Hey, that’s a great question because stability is really important with kitchen furniture! My advice: use the original Ikea screws or high-quality chipboard screws about 30mm (1.2 inches) long.

I’ve done this myself a few times, and if you use the right screws, the drawer stays rock solid, even when you put something heavy inside. Not too thin and not too long – it’s as simple as that.

Keep at it, it will turn out really well!

I agree with this assessment. Additionally, I can say that screws with a countersunk head are ideal to ensure flush installation of drawer slides.

Furthermore, consider the following:
- Avoid coarse-thread screws, as they can damage the wood more quickly.
- Stainless steel screws offer the advantage of being corrosion-resistant, especially in more humid kitchen environments.
- Pre-drilling is usually not necessary for IKEA furniture but can make installation easier and reduce splitting when using alternative screws.

A good choice would be a 4 mm diameter, 30 mm length, zinc-plated or stainless steel particleboard screw with a countersunk head. Alternatively, using the IKEA-specific screws can also make sense, as they are specially designed for the metal-to-wood system.
