Hello everyone, I am currently working on assembling the Ikea Platsa series and have encountered the challenge of identifying the most commonly used screw sizes.
Since Ikea’s assembly instructions are often quite general and don’t always specify all dimensions precisely, I would like to ask you: Which screw sizes (length, diameter, and if applicable thread type) are most frequently found in Platsa furniture in practice?
I am interested both in the use of the original screws included in the set and in any replacement or supplementary screws that have proven particularly useful.
The goal is to be better prepared in the future and have the right screws on hand to avoid interruptions or delays during assembly.
Do you have any experience or a detailed list of the most common screw sizes for Ikea Platsa? Thanks in advance!

Hello Arlettka,
A very good and important question, especially since Ikea often uses general estimates in their instructions and the screws included in the set can vary depending on the PLATSA variant.
Based on my previous assemblies, the most common screw types for Ikea PLATSA are as follows:
- Cylinder head screws with a diameter of 4 mm (0.16 inches), usually between 30 and 50 mm (1.2 and 2 inches) in length, often 40 mm (1.6 inches)
- Chipboard screws (a common type used for wood furniture assembly) with a diameter of 3.5 mm (0.14 inches) and lengths from 16 mm to 25 mm (0.63 to 1 inch)
The 4 mm (0.16 inches) cylinder head screws are mainly used to secure metal connectors (e.g., cam locks or angle brackets) to the wooden framework. The chipboard screws are used for directly joining wood panels.
I would recommend keeping a small selection of these sizes on hand. It is also important to pay attention to the thread pitch and the screw head type when buying replacements, as Ikea often uses hex or Allen head screws.
Another important point: When purchasing replacement screws, always choose rust-resistant materials to ensure long-term stability and durability.
I would also be interested to know which PLATSA elements you specifically plan to assemble so I can recommend the screws even more precisely.

I would still like to know which specific PLATSA components you plan to assemble so I can recommend the screws more precisely.Thank you for the detailed response! At the moment, I plan to mainly put together the typical combinations of base cabinets with bottom supports, back panels, and sliding doors. So, the modules are quite varied with different connection points.
I assume that particle board screws are often used here, but also various screws for attaching the sliding door units or the back panels.
If you have more specific advice on the types of screws for these particular mounting points, that would be very helpful. I am especially interested in whether there are differences between screws for metal hinges and those for securing the back panels.
Hello everyone,
I would like to add some more information, as the issue of screw sizes for Ikea PLATSA is actually more complex than initially expected.
In detail, the most commonly used screws generally fall into two main categories:
- Chipboard screws: Mostly 3.5 mm diameter, with lengths varying depending on the component from 16 mm (about 0.6 inches) for securing thin back panels up to 25 mm (about 1 inch) for load-bearing connections. Important: The tips of these screws are usually sharp but without a drill point, meaning pre-drilling or careful screwing is needed to avoid splitting the material.
- Hex socket head screws: Typically 4 x 40 mm (about 0.16 x 1.6 inches). These screws, used in combination with cam connectors and angle brackets, form the weakest but often most stressed type of connection. They provide a secure, detachable joint when properly guided.
Regarding your question about back panels: usually small panel nails are used, which are simply tapped into small holes. Sometimes thin chipboard screws of 3.5 x 16 mm (about 0.14 x 0.6 inches) are used, which are relatively flat since the back panels are usually very thin.
Metal hinges are almost always fastened with 3.5 to 4 mm (about 0.14 to 0.16 inches) chipboard screws, approximately 16 to 20 mm (about 0.6 to 0.8 inches) long, perfectly sized to securely anchor the hinge without damaging the back side of the panels.
If you plan to assemble or disassemble the furniture frequently, I would recommend using high-quality stainless steel screws, as they show less wear with multiple removals.
One last question for you: Are you currently using only the original assembly instructions, or do you already have additional measurements or screw reference lists available somewhere?

So far, I have only been using the original instructions from Ikea, which often provide limited details regarding the exact screw types and sizes.
I have been considering putting together a small set of screws covering the most common types used for PLATSA – especially since I like to build variations and don’t want to open new sets all the time.
It would also be interesting to hear if any of you have experience with screws from other sources that are better than the Ikea originals, or if it’s generally better to stick to the original hardware to ensure compatibility and stability.

Marlenepa15 Jul 2023 11:33Hello Arlettka and everyone else,
I just wanted to add that Ikea PLATSA often uses so-called Minifix connectors. These require special cylinder head screws with an internal hex drive, usually with a 4 mm (0.16 inch) diameter and about 40 mm (1.6 inch) length.
A tip: If you have multiple modules, it’s worth marking each type of screw slightly or storing them separately in small boxes. This helps avoid mix-ups during assembly.
Also, I’ve noticed that chipboard screws with a Phillips head are less common in PLATSA; internal hex screws are preferred, which is important for strength and durability.
Regarding the material, I find stainless steel to be the best choice, especially if the furniture is often moved or assembled in different locations. They don’t rust or seize up.
If you need more detailed advice about the tools for assembly, I’m happy to help.
