Hello everyone, I am currently working on assembling the Ikea Platsa series and have encountered the challenge of identifying the most commonly used screw sizes.

Since Ikea’s assembly instructions are often quite general and don’t always specify all dimensions precisely, I would like to ask you: Which screw sizes (length, diameter, and if applicable thread type) are most frequently found in Platsa furniture in practice?

I am interested both in the use of the original screws included in the set and in any replacement or supplementary screws that have proven particularly useful.

The goal is to be better prepared in the future and have the right screws on hand to avoid interruptions or delays during assembly.

Do you have any experience or a detailed list of the most common screw sizes for Ikea Platsa? Thanks in advance!

Good morning everyone,

I would like to add some information, especially regarding common mistakes and practical tips when working with screws in Ikea Platsa.

1. Screw Cleanliness: In some cases, small impurities on screws in Ikea sets are not uncommon. This can increase the risk of cross-threading when driving them in. Therefore, it is advisable to quickly inspect the screws before assembly and, if necessary, lightly smooth them with sandpaper or a fine file.

2. Pre-drilling for Chipboard Screws: Although often screws are used without pre-drilling, drilling pilot holes in thin or delicate materials can prevent splitting and result in a stronger connection.

3. Torque: When tightening cylinder head screws, it is essential to apply the correct torque. Over-tightening can cause the screws to tear out of the material, while under-tightening will not provide sufficient clamping force.

4. Alternatives: If you need replacements, use screws with M4 threads and low heads, specifically designed for furniture connectors. Make sure the screws are not too long, as they may protrude through the other side.

In conclusion, the most common screws are cylinder head screws with a 4 mm (0.16 inch) diameter (usually 40 mm (1.57 inch) long) and chipboard screws with a 3.5 mm (0.14 inch) diameter (16–25 mm (0.63–0.98 inch) long).

If you like, I can prepare a short list with length-specific assignments for various PLATSA modules.

Hey, great thread!

To make things a bit easier: Most of us know that feeling when a screw doesn’t fit and you end up rummaging through half your toolbox. PLATSA is no exception. That’s why I’ve gotten into the habit of always having small sets of the most important screws ready, sometimes including a few alternative stainless steel screws.

My favorites, as often mentioned, are:
- M4 hex head screws, 40 mm (about 1 ½ inches) – ideal for metal connectors
- 3.5 x 16 or 3.5 x 25 mm wood screws for back panels and hinges

And here’s a tip: Keep these screws in small, separate containers, preferably labeled, because mixing them all together only makes things harder later on. This way, assembling is more fun – and faster! 😉

For sliding door fittings, slightly shorter screws are often required, so don’t be surprised, but most of the parts generally use the screws mentioned above.
