Hello everyone, I am currently planning the assembly of my new IKEA Platsa furniture and want to make sure the joints are especially strong and durable. Therefore, I have a detailed question: Which screw methods or joining techniques do you recommend that are particularly reliable for Platsa furniture? I’m interested in tips regarding the choice of screws, insertion depth, torque settings, as well as any useful additional measures like glue or reinforcements. Who has experience with the standard connections and might know alternatives to increase stability? I appreciate all advice, including mistakes to avoid.

I would always use the original metal screws with wall anchors for PLATSA. Tighten them until secure, but do not overtighten. For added stability, securing the connections with wood glue helps.

The screwing methods for PLATSA are generally designed for easy assembly, but for increased stability, I recommend the following procedure:

- First, always properly align the original fasteners.
- Insert screws using a suitable Phillips or Allen key, depending on the instructions.
- Tighten screws only enough to avoid bulging the wood.
- Use wood glue in the drill holes before screwing to strengthen the joint and reduce tensile stress.
- For particularly load-bearing connections: install additional angle brackets that reinforce the corner edges from the inside.

Common mistakes include overtightening and not using glue, which can wear down the wood over time. If you want, I can also give you tips on retightening the screws after a few weeks.

That sounds interesting—so the wood glue is crucial for tensile strength? I’m asking because I’ve read that with panel materials like PLATSA, the screw connection alone sometimes doesn’t hold well. From your experience, how reliably does wood glue hold over the long term in this context? Or do you use other types of joints alongside screws and glue?

Thanks for this tip as well. Does anyone have a recommendation for the best wood glue (brand or type)?

Hello, I like to go into detail about screw connections, especially for flat-pack furniture like the IKEA PLATSA system.

First of all: The standard connectors in PLATSA are so-called cam lock and dowel joints, which rely on press-fit connections. The strength of these joints is not mainly based on the screw itself, but on the precise fit and material compression.

For maximum strength, the following points are important:
- Use the original screws and dowels, as they are designed for MDF panel flexibility.
- Tighten screws only by hand, as over-tightening can damage the MDF material.
- Before screwing, applying a small amount of wood glue into the dowel holes can improve tensile strength by bonding the fibers.
- It is recommended not only to fasten with screws but also to reinforce the furniture internally with brackets or corner braces for added stability.
- Another tip: Slightly retighten the screws after a few weeks to prevent loosening that can occur with use.

Screws with a larger diameter or longer screws are rarely retrofit-able due to the predefined drill holes, so it’s better to rely on additional reinforcements.

What are your specific conditions? Do the furniture pieces need to support very heavy loads, or are they intended mainly for regular household use?

Just a quick note: Always tighten the connections only enough to eliminate any wobbling – overtightening causes more harm than good.

Using wood glue between the screw and the board increases strength; use it sparingly.
