Hello everyone, I am currently looking into purchasing an Ikea Pax wardrobe and am particularly interested in models that offer large shelving compartments. I am especially curious about which versions within the Pax series provide comparatively spacious, wide shelves to accommodate larger items or bulky books. I would also like to understand the sizes and depths available for shelves in the Pax systems and whether certain versions offer more flexibility in terms of shelf arrangement. If anyone has experience with specific models or can recommend options with larger shelving spaces within the Pax series, that would be very helpful.

Interesting point. A fundamental question here is whether you are looking for standardized shelves or prefer an adjustable-height system. Many Pax models have the same external dimensions, but the internal shelving can be arranged flexibly.

Additionally, at Ikea, the shelf widths and heights sometimes depend on the door or side panel size. Therefore, it would be helpful to clarify whether you are more interested in cabinets that are 50cm (20 inches), 75cm (30 inches), or 100cm (39 inches) wide, since the internal dimensions—and accordingly the shelf sizes—vary.

Otherwise: How important is the shelf depth to you? Most Pax models come with either 35cm (14 inches) or 58cm (23 inches) depth. That makes a big difference, especially for larger shelving units.

Hello! I’ve been following the discussion and think paulo43’s question is really good, as the internal dimensions of Pax wardrobe models are often underestimated.

From my own experience, I would say that the deeper models with a depth of 58 cm (23 inches) offer significantly more storage space. At the same time, the flexibility provided by adjustable shelves and accessories is crucial when it comes to organizing larger items effectively.

I personally have the 75 cm (30 inches) wide version with 58 cm (23 inches) depth and can say that the shelves are indeed quite wide and deep – which is very practical for large folders, boxes, or bulky items. The shelves are height-adjustable and can be adapted quite well according to your needs.

I know this might not give you concrete information on specific models just yet, but maybe this tip can help: just go for the 58 cm (23 inches) depth and you’ll tend to get larger shelves.

Pax is available in widths of 50cm (20 inches), 75cm (30 inches), and 100cm (39 inches). The 75cm (30 inches) and 100cm (39 inches) models offer the largest shelves.

The depth usually ranges between 35cm (14 inches) and 58cm (23 inches). For large shelves, it is better to choose 75cm (30 inches) width with 58cm (23 inches) depth.

Shelves are height-adjustable.

This is the core.

For reference: Pax wardrobe systems are available in three standard widths: 50 cm, 75 cm, and 100 cm (approximately 20, 30, and 40 inches). The shelf width is roughly the cabinet width minus the thickness of the side panels.

Shelves come in widths of 50 cm and 75 cm (20 and 30 inches), matched to the corresponding cabinet sizes. The depth options are either 35 cm or 58 cm (14 and 23 inches), with the deeper shelves suited for larger items.

Therefore, the largest shelves in the Pax systems are found in the 100 cm wide by 58 cm deep (40 by 23 inches) units. These offer surprisingly generous storage space, especially with the standard adjustable shelves, which can be repositioned in 2 cm (0.8 inch) increments.

For maximum shelf size and flexibility, the recommended combination is:
- 100 cm width (40 inches)
- 58 cm depth (23 inches)
- Height-adjustable shelves

This setup provides the most suitable shelves for large, heavy, or bulky items.

That sounds reasonable, but in my opinion, it only tells half the story.

The stability of large shelves with a width of 100 cm (39 inches) can become an issue, especially when storing heavy or very large items. Wide shelves tend to sag under load.

Therefore, it is worthwhile, especially for large shelf compartments, to consider additional reinforcements or dividers. Also, check the maximum load capacity of the shelves.

Standard Pax shelves are sturdy, but their full width does not guarantee unlimited load-bearing capacity. Large shelves might look appealing but could be more practical if designed with more structural support.
