Hello everyone,

I am planning to get an Ikea PAX wardrobe for my small apartment and am looking for recommendations on which models or variations are especially suitable for smaller households. Compact dimensions are important to me, but also sufficient storage space, mainly for clothing and possibly shoes. I am not looking for a large walk-in closet, but rather a space-saving, flexible solution that fits well even in limited room sizes.

Does anyone have experience with PAX wardrobes in small apartments or can recommend specific models that stand out due to clever layout, shallow depth, or other advantages? Tips on smaller widths or heights, as well as practical interior fittings and accessories, are also very welcome.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Hello alitan,

regarding your question about which Ikea PAX models are best suited for smaller households and rooms, I would like to provide a detailed answer, as there are several important aspects to consider.

First of all, the PAX system offers modular base units in different widths (50, 75, 100 cm (approximately 20, 30, 40 inches)) and depths (35 and 58 cm (approximately 14, 23 inches)). For small rooms, the narrower depth of 35 cm (14 inches) is especially recommended because it takes up significantly less space while still providing enough storage for hanging clothes.

Additionally, here are some practical combinations:

- Small width: 50 cm (20 inches) wide PAX frames are ideal when wall space is limited.
- Height: Standard heights are 201 or 236 cm (79, 93 inches); for small rooms, the lower height is often better as it feels less overwhelming.
- Interior fittings: Use primarily hanging rods, shelves, and small drawers to stay flexible and avoid wasting space with unnecessary bulk.

Tip: You can place several 50-cm (20-inch) wardrobe units side by side to vary the overall width while maintaining flexibility. Sliding doors also take up less space in front of the wardrobe and can be very useful in tight rooms.

Summary:
- PAX with 50 cm (20 inches) width and 35 cm (14 inches) depth
- 201 cm (79 inches) height for a lighter feel
- Sliding doors instead of hinged doors
- Interior with a combination of drawers and rods

With this setup, you have a very efficient and manageable solution for small spaces.

If you have any further questions, I’m happy to help!

I can confirm that. A depth of 35 cm (14 inches) is often sufficient if you don’t need to hang very bulky clothing.

Additionally, I recommend PAX wardrobes with sliding doors to save space.

I would like to add a few important points regarding PAX models for smaller households.

Firstly, the choice of interior fittings is often more crucial than the overall frame size. For example, using pull-out pants hangers or special tie/belt racks can help make more efficient use of the available space.

Secondly, when measuring and planning, consider whether you will also need to store shoes or other items. If so, additional shoe shelves are useful, which can be selected as inserts or in a slightly deeper depth.

That leads me to ask: What is the ceiling height in your room? And do you have the option to divide a wardrobe into several separate modules that can be placed side by side or even in corners? This provides more flexibility.

Also, if space is really limited, I recommend going with the PAX system using a 50 cm (20 inch) deep base unit and choosing appropriate interior fittings that remain modular and expandable. Some opt for 35 cm (14 inch) depth, as tolokau mentioned, but you should be aware that this can limit hanging space for certain items (shirt or jacket sleeves need room).

If you have a higher budget, you might also consider additional organizational accessories compatible with PAX, such as drawer inserts with adjustable compartments that make optimal use of the volume.

Please feel free to provide more details about your room and main requirements, so I can offer more targeted advice.
