Hello everyone,

I am planning to get a new Pax wardrobe system and am currently deciding which doors to choose. My question is: Which Ikea Pax doors are considered the most durable by actual users, especially regarding material quality, resistance to scratches and warping, as well as the longevity of hinges and fittings?

My main concern is that the doors withstand daily use – whether there are children in the household, frequent opening and closing, or stresses from overhead cabinets or constant contact.

It would be great if you could share your experiences with the different types (e.g. solid wood, high gloss, mirrored doors, etc.), ideally including any notes on possible weaknesses or special considerations for installation or maintenance. Thanks in advance!

I can understand you well – I also have small children, and with us, the high-gloss version got scratched very quickly.

This is exactly the issue I encountered with high-gloss Pax doors. The surface shows even the smallest scratches and is less resistant to mechanical stress.

It is important to properly adjust the hinges and regularly check the tension of the doors.

I completely agree. People often think the doors just need to be attached somehow, but especially with plastic or veneered doors, tensions can quickly build up, causing warping. With wooden doors, excessive moisture can also lead to swelling.

I strongly recommend the solid wood frame doors from Pax, as they come with high-quality veneer and stable edge gluing. Additionally, you can apply a protective layer of oil or wax as needed. Due to the frame construction, they are much less prone to warping than flat high-gloss or MDF doors.

My advice: If possible, follow the assembly instructions exactly, including the door adjustment steps – Ikea doors are often sturdy; they just need proper alignment.

From a technical perspective, the following can be noted:

- Veneered wooden doors are superior to high-gloss lacquered doors in terms of resistance to mechanical stress and scratches.
- Mirror doors require careful installation since the risk of glass breakage and hardware stress is present.
- The hinges on Pax doors are metal-reinforced and durable, but adjustments are recommended, especially with frequent use.

For a robust overall system, I recommend veneered solid wood frame doors combined with soft-close hinges, as the damping reduces stress and increases durability. Surface care should be done using mild cleaning agents to preserve the protective layer of the veneers.

Specific weaknesses of high-gloss finishes include micro-scratches and fingerprints, while mirror doors need caution against impacts and edge pressure.

Which option did you finally decide on, or are there any other requirements?
