Hello everyone,
I am planning to get a new Pax wardrobe system and am currently deciding which doors to choose. My question is: Which Ikea Pax doors are considered the most durable by actual users, especially regarding material quality, resistance to scratches and warping, as well as the longevity of hinges and fittings?
My main concern is that the doors withstand daily use – whether there are children in the household, frequent opening and closing, or stresses from overhead cabinets or constant contact.
It would be great if you could share your experiences with the different types (e.g. solid wood, high gloss, mirrored doors, etc.), ideally including any notes on possible weaknesses or special considerations for installation or maintenance. Thanks in advance!

The wood veneer doors hold up much better in everyday use, feel more sturdy, and still look well-maintained even after extended use.
However, a weak point in both options is the hinges, so I would recommend spending some time adjusting them properly. Especially if the doors are opened frequently, this helps prevent damage.

to answer your question effectively, it would be helpful to know more about the intended use. For example:
- How large is the wardrobe? (e.g., number and type of doors)
- Will the doors be heavily used, such as in a family home with children, or in an adults-only household?
- Are there specific requirements for appearance (color, surface finish) or ease of maintenance?
Still, from a technical perspective, I can note the following:
Veneered doors (e.g., birch, oak) are generally more resistant to damage than high-gloss lacquered surfaces, which show scratches immediately and are often harder to repair. For mirrored doors, stability depends largely on the thickness of the glass; glass breakage can be a potential risk if there are children in the household.
The issue of fittings (hinges, dampers) is also crucial: Ikea generally uses sturdy metal hinges, but proper installation and adjustment are essential, otherwise stress can lead to premature wear. A tip: doors with a soft-close function move more gently and reduce dynamic stress.
Maintenance instructions should not be underestimated either: veneered surfaces are more sensitive to moisture, while high-gloss finishes can be cleaned easily with a slightly damp microfiber cloth but, as mentioned, show scratches more quickly.
I would also recommend paying attention to the mechanical construction of the doors – more solid frame constructions offer better stability and resistance to twisting.
Do you have specific doors in mind for your shortlist? I can then provide more detailed information about their workmanship, materials, and durability.
Basically, doors with real wood veneer are the most durable. It is important to adjust the hinges correctly and regularly check the doors for tension. High-gloss models look elegant but are more prone to scratches and fingerprints. In households with children, I always tend to prefer matte or veneered surfaces.
