Hello everyone, I’m considering getting Pax wardrobes from Ikea for the children’s room and I’m wondering: Which Ikea Pax wardrobe doors are particularly child-friendly? It’s important to me that the doors are sturdy enough to withstand frequent opening and closing, have minimal risk of injury (for example, from pinching or sharp edges), and that children can operate them easily on their own. Doors with soft-close mechanisms would be ideal as well. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on which options work best? Thanks in advance for your feedback!
Basically, Ikea PAX sliding doors are somewhat less child-friendly, mainly due to the tracks and the force children often exert uncontrollably. For families, I recommend hinged doors with soft-close fittings instead, as these can reduce the risk of fingers getting caught. The white solid doors with paint finish are especially sturdy and easy to clean. Additionally, doors with recessed handles have no protruding parts, which minimizes the risk of injury.

Sliding doors are mechanically more prone to issues and can easily come off the track when children handle them roughly. For use in a child’s bedroom, doors with soft-close dampers are recommended because they prevent slamming, thereby reducing the risk of injury.
Additionally, doors with rounded or chamfered edges are better suited as they minimize the chance of harm upon contact. Ikea offers a soft-close feature on some models, such as the "VOXNAN" doors, which I personally find best. It is also important that the doors fit well within the frames to avoid finger pinching.
Hey! I recently bought PAX for my daughter's bedroom and can definitely recommend the soft-close doors! They make a big difference, especially when the little ones are learning to tidy up on their own. The 'VOXNAN' fronts also look really good and are very sturdy! The doors close gently, so you don’t have to worry about little fingers. Absolutely thumbs up for that!
I understand the concerns about safety with PAX doors very well. From my experience, even with soft-close mechanisms, it’s impossible to completely prevent children’s fingers from getting pinched. We had additional door handles installed to make it easier for the children to open the doors without pushing or slamming them shut. I also checked the edges – smooth surfaces and no small gaps reduce the risk of clothing getting caught. This makes you feel somewhat safer, although of course it’s not a hundred percent protection.
