Hello everyone, I’m planning to upgrade my Ikea Pax wardrobe and I’m currently unsure which hanging rods are the best choice. There are different types available, such as standard metal rods for the typical width, extendable hanging rods, rods with or without shelf space, as well as various materials and load capacities.

My main questions are: Which hanging rods are the most stable and can support heavier clothing items well? Which ones offer the best functionality while being easy to install and possibly adjustable? It would also be helpful to know if there are any recommended alternatives to the standard Ikea range that integrate well with the Pax system.

I have a 100cm (39 inch) wide wardrobe and want to maximize storage space and organization. Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

For the 100 cm (39 inch) wide Pax wardrobe, I recommend the standard metal clothes rails from Ikea, as they are sturdy and fit perfectly. Extendable options are convenient if you want flexibility but are less load-bearing. If you plan to hang heavy coats or suits, it is better to choose the fixed rails.

It is interesting that the strongest rods are often recommended here without considering that the load capacity greatly depends on the material and the mounting method. Simply choosing the standard metal rod is not enough. It is also important how well the rod is secured inside the cabinet. I am also wondering if installing additional mounting plates can increase the load-bearing capacity or if that only results in cosmetic changes. Does anyone have reliable data on this? And what about the option of extendable rods in terms of durability? Are they really advisable for long-term use?

Hello Fardra3 and everyone else, based on my many years of experience with Pax, I can say the following: The standard clothes rails from Ikea are sturdy, but for heavy garments like winter coats, I strongly recommend reinforcing the rails on the sides with mounting plates – this significantly improves stability. For extendable clothes rails, it’s important to ensure they are well-made, as lower-quality models tend to jam or bend easily. Personally, I have also had good experiences with stainless steel clothes rails that can be custom cut afterwards at specialist stores. Although these are not Ikea materials, they are compatible and more durable. A shelf placed directly above the rail for foldable boxes or smaller accessories is also very practical and helps keep things organized.

This statement is accurate. The load capacity of a clothes rail depends not only on the material but especially on the method of attachment within the Pax frame. Ikea itself recommends using reinforced rods with additional brackets for heavy loads.

Another reliable solution is securing the rod with metal angle brackets, which provide extra stability and significantly reduce the risk of bending. I suggest planning the load distribution before installation and, if necessary, using multiple rods instead of hanging all garments on one rail.

Regarding extendable clothes rails, these are more prone to wear due to their mechanism and should be used mainly for lighter textiles. In this case, functionality often comes at the expense of durability.

For pull-out clothes rails, it is important to ensure they are well made, as low-quality models can quickly jam or bend.

I can only confirm that. I once had a pull-out clothes rail in a Pax wardrobe that warped after a few months and then barely worked. This is especially frustrating if the wardrobe is used frequently.

When choosing clothes rails, besides stability and load capacity, I also consider ease of maintenance and replaceability. Sometimes it’s better to invest in a slightly more durable option that can carry extra weight without constant repairs.

Therefore, I would carefully take into account personal experiences and reviews from other users when making a decision.
