AARONPLOHello everyone,
I am planning to redesign my Ikea Platsa wardrobe and want to upgrade the existing doors with suitable handles. I am particularly interested in which types of handles work best for Platsa doors—considering practical use, design, and ease of installation.
I understand that Platsa doors are quite flat and simple, which makes choosing handles more challenging compared to classic doors with deeper profiles or frames. It would also be helpful if the handles are durable and ideally easy to install, as I will be doing it myself.
Do you have recommendations for handle models, materials, and attachment methods? Are there any that work especially well with the thinner door material or where I should pay attention to the drilling hole dimensions? I don’t want to just use the standard handles from the Ikea range; I’m looking for something that fits well visually and performs functionally. Thanks in advance!

Basically, for Ikea Platsa doors, handles with a maximum drilling depth of about 16 mm (0.6 inches) are recommended, since the doors are made of thinner MDF panels and deeper drilling can weaken the material.
Flat bar handles made of metal or plastic, which can be mounted with short screws, are advisable. These provide both stability and a high-quality appearance. Models with simple lines, such as brushed aluminum, are popular because they fit well into modern interior designs.
It is important to measure carefully beforehand to determine the possible handle spacing and whether existing drill holes can be used to minimize the risk of additional holes. Some users report that self-adhesive silicone handles can be an option for light use, but from a durability perspective, I consider screwed handles more suitable.

Platsa doors are usually made from 8-10 mm (0.3-0.4 inches) thick particleboard coated with melamine. As a result, you should avoid using screws that are too long, since they could penetrate through or cause the edge to chip. Handles that are fastened with screws between 10 and a maximum of 15 mm (0.4 and 0.6 inches) in length are therefore optimal.
For installation, it is recommended to pre-drill the screw holes slightly with a drill to minimize damage to the surface coating.
In terms of design, simple, minimalist handles work best—such as classic band or groove profiles that offer a subtle yet stylish appearance. Stainless steel or matte brushed metal are durable and easy to clean. There are also models with concealed fastenings, which create a very tidy look.
One more tip: If you prefer a handleless door front, consider push-to-open systems that require no visible handles and are especially suitable for modern, Scandinavian-style designs.
How frequently do you plan to use the doors? For heavy use, I would definitely recommend sturdy metal handles; for lighter use, decorative plastic handles can also be considered.

For me, push-to-open systems for Platsa doors are also very practical because they are easy to install and keep the door appearance clean and simple.
If you want handles, I really like slim bar handles that can be mounted either on the top edge or the side. This creates a defined grip area and avoids the feeling of bulky handles.
Also, it’s important to make sure the screws aren’t too long to prevent any damage.
