Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several IKEA Besta furniture units and want to securely attach them to the wall to prevent tipping and increase stability. My question is: Which wall plugs and screws are best suited for firmly mounting IKEA Besta cabinets to different wall types (e.g., concrete, drywall, brick)?

It is especially important to me that the mounting holds reliably even under full load and that there is no risk from loose anchors. Although I have the fastening hardware supplied by IKEA, I am unsure whether these are sufficient for my walls or if I should opt for stronger alternatives.

I would greatly appreciate any experiences and recommendations regarding which types of wall plugs and screws have proven effective when used with Besta furniture. Additionally, it would be helpful if you could briefly explain what to pay attention to when installing the plugs and screws to ensure everything remains secure. Thanks in advance!

Hello Gumudi,

here is a brief overview of what has proven effective specifically for IKEA Besta furniture and what you should pay attention to:

- Wall type check: For concrete, nylon anchors (e.g., Fischer SX or SXR) or metal anchors are recommended; for brick, also nylon anchors with sufficient length; for drywall, special hollow wall anchors are essential (e.g., metal hollow wall anchors or toggle bolts).
- Screws: Galvanized chipboard screws with sufficient length, usually about 5 x 60 mm (0.2 x 2.4 inches), are ideal. It is important that they fit firmly and without any play.
- Mounting brackets: IKEA supplies appropriate brackets that you attach to the back of the Besta. These should be securely fixed to the wall and not only screwed into the furniture frame.
- Installation tip: Always set anchors with the specified diameter and depth, and avoid drilling too close to edges to prevent cracks.

If everything is done correctly, the construction will hold safely even under full load. I recommend usually replacing the supplied anchors with proven brand products, as they often offer better hold and quality.

If you need more detailed advice or a recommended anchor brand, feel free to ask!

I fixed my Besta to concrete walls using Fischer SX 8 nylon anchors, along with 5x60 mm (2x2.4 inch) chipboard screws. It holds very securely.

An important point is choosing the appropriate anchors depending on the wall material. For drywall, metal hollow wall anchors work most reliably for heavy furniture like Besta, as they grip behind the panel and distribute the load.

For brick walls, anchors should have a diameter of at least 8 mm (0.3 inches) to ensure secure holding. Zinc-plated screws with a diameter of 4.5 to 5 mm (0.18 to 0.2 inches) and a length of at least 50 to 60 mm (2 to 2.4 inches) are recommended here.

In the past, I always replaced the anchors supplied by IKEA, as I considered them more like temporary anchors and preferred proven anchors with manufacturer specifications.

Tip: Clean drill holes thoroughly before inserting the anchors to prevent the anchor from sitting only in dust, which can significantly reduce holding strength.

The combination of suitable wall plugs and screws is crucial for the safety of Besta furniture.

- For solid walls (concrete, solid brick), plastic anchors (nylon wall plugs) with screws sized 5 x 60 mm (5/32 x 2 3/8 inches) are recommended.
- For hollow walls (plasterboard) without additional reinforcement, always use cavity anchors.

The original IKEA fasteners are often intended as a basic set to provide initial fixation. They should not be used for fully loaded furniture without reinforcement.

My advice: Invest in screws and wall plugs with certification marks (e.g., DIN-tested) to ensure safety standards are met. This is especially important in homes with children, as furniture can easily become misaligned or tip over if the fasteners are not secure.

I completely understand how uncertainty can arise with this kind of topic. I attached my TV bracket to an old brick wall and was also unsure about the anchors. My experience: you should avoid the simple plastic anchors that come in generic packs.

I chose Fischer SX 10 anchors, which are a bit thicker. The 5x60 mm (5/32 x 2 3/8 inch) screws fit well. It takes some force to install them, but afterwards everything felt very stable. Even if you move the furniture, it stays securely attached to the wall.

My tip: If you have a second person, have them hold the furniture while you drill and screw – it also gives you more safety while working.
