Hello everyone,

I am currently looking for interesting DIY ideas related to IKEA Hemnes furniture. I am particularly interested in projects that are not only visually appealing but also functional and can be implemented with relatively little effort. From your experience, which are the most popular and creative modifications that are frequently done? Perhaps you also have specific tips on material selection or tool use that can make the process easier? I look forward to your diverse input!

What about the surfaces if you want something durable? Are there specific paints or sealants you would particularly recommend for HEMNES?

For increased durability, acrylic paints or specialized furniture lacquers are recommended, as they create a hard, easily wipeable surface. PU (polyurethane) coatings offer even better protection but are more challenging to apply. Proper surface preparation with light sanding is important to ensure good adhesion of the paint.

A quick addition about the restyling: I think it’s great to remove the finger grooves on Hemnes dressers and instead install suitable handles. This makes the piece of furniture look much more modern and personalized. There are plenty of designs available, so it really creates a nice effect!

I have seen that some HEMNES cabinets were converted into wine racks. Simply adjust or remove the shelves and add rods. Practical and stylish.

DIY ideas for HEMNES often include transforming it into seating furniture with storage, for example, by adding a cushion on top and a hinged lid. Perfect for the hallway or bedroom.

Many people craft small stylish bookshelves from the HEMNES shelves by adding built-in LED strips.

The idea of adding LEDs sounds exciting! How complex is it to retrofit a HEMNES shelf with LEDs? Do you need special electrician skills, or is some basic DIY ability enough? Are there preferred types of LEDs for installation?

For LED strips on HEMNES shelves, a standard 12 V LED strip is usually sufficient, which can be attached to the back panel or the underside of the shelves. Power is often supplied from a socket behind the furniture. Soldering or special electrical knowledge is hardly necessary if you use connectors. A drill hole for the cable may be required. If you want to be sure, an electrician can perform the final inspection.
