Hello everyone, I have a question regarding my Ikea Hemnes furniture: How can I effectively protect my HEMNES dressers and shelves from damage caused by pets, especially from cat scratches and dog saliva marks? The furniture is made of solid wood or has a coated finish, and I want to preserve the charm and surface as long as possible without having to replace the furniture. What protective measures have worked well for you? I am thinking, for example, of special sealants, protective films, or maybe furniture care products that are particularly durable against pet contact. I look forward to your practical tips and experiences!

It is best to use clear furniture waxes or sealants that are water- and scratch-resistant. Protective films also work well on especially exposed areas.

I understand well how annoying that can be – our tomcat also caused quite a bit of damage. I can only recommend not just protecting the upholstery but also keeping the cats engaged with their own scratching posts. This significantly reduces the risk to the HEMNES furniture.

Here is a brief guide I would like to share with you:
- First, check whether the surface of your HEMNES furniture is made of solid wood or if it consists of veneered panels.
- For solid wood, special waxes are recommended to protect the wood while keeping it breathable.
- For veneered or lacquered surfaces, do not use waxes; instead, apply scratch protection films.
- Scratch protection films can be easily cut to size and applied with special adhesive.
- Also, provide thorough maintenance of the wood with furniture oil, which makes the surface more durable.
- To protect against saliva marks, place covers or protective mats around the furniture.
Common mistakes include using overly aggressive cleaners and oils that damage the surface.

I believe that a good amount of patience and a bit of humor can take you a long way! 😀 But seriously: I also had a few HEMNES pieces of furniture and applied soft, self-adhesive felt pads to vulnerable spots, which helped reduce scratches – not 100%, but better than nothing.

To effectively protect your Ikea HEMNES furniture, I recommend the following approach:

First, identify the type of wood and its surface finish accurately, ideally by checking the product description or testing a small sample. Solid wood responds differently to sealants than painted surfaces.

Second, for solid wood, a thin-layer, water-repellent hard wax oil is advisable. This penetrates deeply and enhances natural resistance to moisture and mechanical stress without altering the appearance. Make sure to apply multiple thin coats and observe the drying times to achieve maximum protection.

Third, for painted furniture surfaces like most HEMNES pieces, a transparent protective film designed to prevent scratches is suitable. These films are self-adhesive and can be removed if necessary. The challenge is applying them precisely and without air bubbles—using a squeegee and possibly mild warming of the film can help.

Fourth, in homes with pets, special anti-scratch sprays are available that are often recommended alongside furniture care products. These sprays provide a light protective layer against scratches but are less effective against deeper claw marks.

Finally, proper pet training and limiting access to the furniture can provide the best protection—because even the best sealant is not indestructible.
