Hello everyone, I have a question about sustainable cleaning of Ikea Hemnes furniture. These pieces are mainly made of solid pine wood, often with a lacquer or oil finish. My question is: What is the best way to clean Hemnes furniture without damaging the surface texture and protective layer, while still using environmentally friendly products and avoiding harsh chemicals? Are there any proven home remedies or specific products suitable for regular cleaning that do not compromise the sustainability of the material? I look forward to practical tips and experiences!

That’s a very relevant question! The challenge is that oils and varnishes are sensitive to solvents often found in cleaners. My general recommendation would be:
- Avoid products containing ammonia, alcohol, or strong surfactants.
- Instead, use mild soap solutions or specially formulated wood furniture cleaners.

It would be interesting to hear if anyone has experience with homemade natural cleaners—such as vinegar or oil mixtures. However, vinegar carries the risk of damaging the surface over time due to its acidity.

I only use warm water with a bit of natural soap for my Hemnes furniture. Afterwards, I wipe it dry thoroughly. No harsh cleaning agents, no vinegar-based cleaners!

Great question! 😊 I always clean my Hemnes furniture with a soft cloth and a little olive oil mixed with lemon juice. This really nourishes the surface and looks fantastic! Truly sustainable and natural. Give it a try – your furniture will thank you!

That sounds naturally appealing at first, but lemon juice contains acids that can damage the protective finish. The effect probably won’t last long. It’s important to distinguish between care and cleaning here: treatment oils can improve appearance, but regular use may harm the finish. Therefore, a clear separation of purposes would be advisable.

For regular cleaning, it is best to use a slightly damp microfiber cloth. If there is grease or smudges, add a small amount of dish soap to the water. Afterwards, wipe again with a dry cloth.
