Hello everyone, I have a question about sustainable cleaning of Ikea Hemnes furniture. These pieces are mainly made of solid pine wood, often with a lacquer or oil finish. My question is: What is the best way to clean Hemnes furniture without damaging the surface texture and protective layer, while still using environmentally friendly products and avoiding harsh chemicals? Are there any proven home remedies or specific products suitable for regular cleaning that do not compromise the sustainability of the material? I look forward to practical tips and experiences!

That initially sounds quite natural, but lemon juice contains acids that could damage the protective paint layer.I agree. Unfortunately, there are often many half-truths in household tips. While lemon juice is a popular cleaning agent, caution is especially advised with painted furniture like Hemnes.

I only use warm water with a little pure soap on my Hemnes furniture. In my opinion, that is the gentlest method.
I often wonder how sustainable a piece of furniture truly remains when special cleaners or even care oils are used continuously. For me, sustainability not only includes the material and production but also a longer lifespan through gentle treatment. That’s why basic cleaning with mild agents makes a lot of sense. I recommend regular cleaning with plain water, at most with a few drops of neutral soap. Often, that is all that is needed.

They usually recommend avoiding harsh cleaning agents, as these can damage the protective surface. Microfiber cloths without additives, water with mild soap, or special furniture care wipes that are free of solvents can be ideal. Sustainability in this context is a fine balance between proper maintenance and gentle cleaning.

It is important to clearly distinguish between maintenance and cleaning: maintenance oils can improve the appearance, but with regular use, the paint or lacquer layer may deteriorate.Good point, I agree! Thanks for the clarification. Since then, I only use water and soap for cleaning, which is completely sufficient. I apply the oil only occasionally, when the furniture needs a bit more care. This way, the appearance stays nice and lasts longer!
