Hello everyone, I am planning to get new Billy shelves from IKEA and want to pay particular attention to the maximum load capacity. My specific question is: Which versions or models of the BILLY shelves have the highest load capacity per shelf, and are there differences between the various materials (wood, metal, etc.)? I am looking for shelves that can hold heavy books, so this is a crucial factor for me. Perhaps someone here has practical experience or can share technical data on this. Thanks in advance for your answers!

A small tip: use additional metal supports or shelving brackets, if available, to reinforce the floor panels.
I filled a BILLY shelf with about 40 kg (88 lbs) per shelf! 🙂 It’s important to install the back panel correctly and securely fasten the shelf to the wall. I usually use book sets that distribute the weight evenly and have never had any issues with sagging. It’s amazing how sturdy the shelves are when assembled properly!

It's amazing how stable the shelves are when you assemble them properly! That matches my experience as well. In my opinion, the most important thing is not just to place the shelf but also to secure it. Without wall anchoring, I often have concerns, especially with taller BILLY shelves.
I would like to point out again that the manufacturer’s specifications from IKEA are based on ideal laboratory conditions. The maximum load per shelf should be considered with a safety margin. Additionally, aging and moisture have an effect on wooden shelves.
I agree with that; long-term loads and dynamic loads should also be taken into account.

The official limit of 30 kg per shelf seems very general to me.

If significantly higher load capacities are needed, one should consider modular or more professional shelving systems. Thanks for the advice. Indeed, for very heavy books, I’m also wondering if BILLY is the right shelf. But if anyone has a tip for an IKEA-like system with a higher load capacity, I would appreciate it. Otherwise, I’m probably planning smaller units and multiple sets overall.
