Hello everyone,

I am planning to furnish my apartment with BILLY shelves from IKEA, but I especially want to know which of the different BILLY models are suitable for supporting really heavy loads.

I understand that the standard shelves are designed to hold books up to a certain weight, but I am looking for specific recommendations or experience-based advice on which shelves are best if they need to carry, for example, heavy binders, files, or even decorative items made of metal.

Are there special versions with reinforced shelves, made from different materials, or perhaps with additional stabilization? If so, how do they differ in load capacity and assembly?

I look forward to your expertise and as detailed information as possible so I can plan without risk. Thanks in advance!

Hello MUDUCHEN,

Regarding your question: The load capacity of BILLY shelves generally varies depending on the design and the type of shelf board. The original BILLY standard shelves support about 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf board, as long as the load is evenly distributed.

However, there are versions with glass shelves or reinforced wooden shelves. The latter are not officially labeled by IKEA as "BILLY with higher load capacity," but they can be optimized with additional shelf supports or wall mounting.

If you need to store significantly heavier items, I recommend checking out the BILLY/Oxberg model with the steel frame at IKEA. These models have sturdier support structures.

An important point is wall mounting: I always recommend it—especially when storing heavy items. It greatly reduces the risk of tipping and significantly increases stability.

If you want to discuss the maximum weight in detail, feel free to ask, and I can also provide general tips on performing a weight simulation test.

I will systematically add some insights based on my experience:

1. Material: Most BILLY shelves are made of veneered particleboard, designed for regular books or decorative items. For heavy loads, the risk of deformation increases if the shelves are thin.

2. Shelves: BILLY shelves typically have a load capacity of about 25-30 kg (55-66 lbs) when the weight is distributed evenly. Especially if you plan to store binders or metal objects, distribute the load across multiple shelves and avoid placing an excessive weight on a single board.

3. Reinforcement: You can strengthen a shelf by installing additional support rails underneath or by choosing shorter shelves, which reduces sagging.

4. Variants: There are special versions of the BILLY shelf with steel frames (e.g., BILLY/OXBERG), which offer significantly higher stability and are better suited for heavy loads than standard wooden shelves.

My advice: Measure your needs carefully before purchase (weight of items, layout), use wall anchoring, and reinforce the shelves as needed. This ensures long-lasting stability.

If you’re interested in technical details about installation and appropriate accessories, just let me know!

I can only confirm that – I have the BILLY/OXBERG shelf myself and use it for my heavy photo albums and metal boxes. It’s really sturdy!

You can really feel how stable the frame is! I’ve also added a few extra center supports just to be on the safe side.

Very important, I’ve always secured the shelf to the wall and have zero concerns about it giving way.

So: If you want to store heavy items, choose the steel frame version, reinforce the shelves if possible, and make sure to mount the shelf to the wall. That way you’re safe, and the shelf looks great too!

I really love these shelves; it’s a lot of fun to organize stuff on them :-)
