Hello everyone,
I am planning to use a Billy bookshelf as a room divider in my apartment to divide an open living room into two areas without blocking too much light. My question is: Which Billy bookshelves are best suited as room dividers, especially considering stability, appearance, and storage space?
I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or tips, for example regarding size, back panel options, or whether the bookshelf can be used from both sides.
Thanks in advance!

Without a back panel, stability is significantly compromisedThat is correct. The back panel is essential for the stability of the BILLY shelves. If you prefer a more open design, it is important to add additional reinforcement such as brackets or metal braces.
Regarding load capacity: The BILLY shelves are designed to support a static load of about 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf. If both sides are loaded and the divider is placed in the center, it is advisable to load the top shelf more lightly to prevent tipping.
If possible, I also recommend the model with a glass back panel. It is more stable than wood and more transparent, which works well visually as a room divider.
