Hello everyone,

I am planning to use a Billy bookshelf as a room divider in my apartment to divide an open living room into two areas without blocking too much light. My question is: Which Billy bookshelves are best suited as room dividers, especially considering stability, appearance, and storage space?

I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or tips, for example regarding size, back panel options, or whether the bookshelf can be used from both sides.

Thanks in advance!

Regarding which BILLY shelves are best suited as room dividers:

I recommend the classic 80x28x106 cm (31.5x11x41.7 inch) shelf in white. This size is compact enough to be used as a room divider without overwhelming the space. Additionally, you might consider removing the back panel or replacing it with a glass panel to increase transparency.

Another option is the taller shelf (80x28x202 cm / 31.5x11x79.5 inch) if more storage space is needed. However, special attention must be paid to stability, especially when the shelf is freestanding.

Important: For stabilization, additional furniture connectors or wall fixings should be used, even if the shelf is positioned in the middle of the room.

I agree with that, especially for compact spaces. Additionally, it’s important to load the shelf evenly on both sides regularly to prevent it from tipping over.

BILLY shelves come standard with back panels, which make the room divider quite solid. For a lighter feeling, you can partially remove or only partially attach the back panel.

If more surface area is needed, you should opt for the wider 106x28x106 cm (41¾x11x41¾ inch) model, as it also serves as a visual highlight in room dividers.

I used a BILLY shelf myself as a room divider between the kitchen and living room and can agree with the suggestions.

What helped me the most was using the shelf effectively on both sides: on one side with attractive decorative items, and on the other with everyday objects. I also placed plants on the top edge, which makes everything feel more lively and less bulky.

At first, I was unsure if it would be stable enough. After a few days, I attached some sturdy brackets at the bottom to the wall to be safe.

If you want plenty of storage but still want to keep an open, airy feel, I would go for the taller version with open shelves and no back panel, as this really makes a big visual difference.

The standard 80x28x106 cm (31½x11x41¾ inches) BILLY shelves are well suited. For more height, use the 80x28x202 cm (31½x11x79½ inches) version and remove the back panel if you want light. Alternatively, use a glass back panel to brighten the room.

For stability, use vertical brackets.

That sounds appealing, but without a back panel, stability is significantly reduced, especially for floor-to-ceiling models. Therefore, it is essential to plan reinforcements—such as metal brackets or additional side supports.

I also recommend weighing functionality against aesthetics. Some users cover the back panel with flexible chalkboard films or stylish fabrics to break up the effect as a room divider without sacrificing stability.

What are your thoughts on versions with a back panel versus open sides? How much weight can these types of room dividers hold long-term without tipping over or warping?
