ᐅ Why doesn’t the new Billy backing panel fit the older shelving unit?

Hello everyone, I recently bought a new back panel for my old Billy shelf, but it doesn’t fit, even though it was advertised as compatible with that model. My specific question is: why might the new back panel not be compatible with my older Billy shelf model? The shelf is about 10 years old, and according to the description, the new back panel has exactly the same dimensions as the old one. However, the mounting holes and the size don’t match, so I can’t attach it. Are there differences in the Billy shelf models that Ikea has changed over the years which could explain this incompatibility? I would appreciate any explanation that can clarify this apparent contradiction of having the same model series but different parts.

If the holes don’t align, you’ll need to either drill new ones or find the old back panel. Ikea sometimes ensures device compatibility, but rarely for parts like these. Don’t try to install it with the new back panel without making any modifications.

Today I measured the shelf and the new back panel more precisely and checked for any identifying numbers. The back panel is printed with "Series Billy, Art.-No. 403.193.67". My old shelf has a small label on the inside at the top edge with "Billy 0020 2013".

Can you tell from these numbers if there are different types of back panels between 2013 and 2024?

Also: The new back panel is definitely thicker (about 5 mm (0.2 inches)) than the old one (about 3 mm (0.1 inches)). Could this alone be the reason why the old holes don't fit?

That is definitely a good approach. The numbers definitely help to identify the version.

Billy shelves have undergone several technical changes since 2013. Back panels have become thicker, and the fastening methods have changed. The item number 403.193.67 belongs to a relatively new version of the back panel, designed for newer shelves. Older shelves from before 2015 often use a thinner back panel, which is attached with small nails.

The 5mm (0.2 inch) thickness compared to 3mm (0.12 inch) alone can cause the holes not to align properly because the panel edges are constructed differently. The shelf itself may also have slightly changed over time.

My tip: If you don’t want to modify the new back panel, look for the replacement part for the 2013 version, possibly at Ikea or on online marketplaces that offer spare parts for older Billy shelves.

The different thicknesses of the back panels are often the main cause of fitting issues. You cannot simply attach a 5 mm (0.2 inch) back panel onto a 3 mm (0.1 inch) shelf. It either won’t fit properly, or you won’t be able to secure it correctly.

Exactly. To be a bit more technical: in the newer versions, Ikea has adjusted the horizontal hole spacing to make the shelf more stable. Also, the edges of the back panel are cut at an angle to replace the need for nailing, which no longer makes sense with thicker boards.

That means it definitely won’t work without some modification. However, you could try adjusting the new back panel with a drill and sanding block if you care about a uniform appearance. Alternatively, restore the old back panel as much as possible or specifically look for the older spare part.

Have you considered reinforcing the old shelf with an MDF board and then using the original fasteners? This would be a DIY solution that also preserves the value of the shelf.

Thank you very much for the tips and explanations. I think I now understand the problem better. I will probably look for a replacement back panel for the 2013 model, as the new back panel looks good visually but does not fit practically.

I will contact Ikea again and ask about a back panel with the old article number. If it is no longer available, I will try to find one through secondhand platforms.

Thanks again to everyone for the explanations; they were very helpful.
