Hello everyone,
I am looking for recommendations for IKEA Billy bookcases that work especially well in small rooms. My room is quite small, so deep or wide models are not really an option because they take up too much space. Flexible shelves that could also fit well into small niches or corners would be important.
I’m particularly interested in which models you recommend for similarly tight spaces, what dimensions work best, and whether there are versions with special features like sliding doors or built-in drawers that make the most of the available space.
Also, I would like to know if height plays a role in small rooms or if it is generally better to choose shallow shelves. Thanks in advance for your advice!

What do you think about the BILLY-Oxberg series? The Oxberg series increases usability in small spaces thanks to its reduced depth of 20cm (8 inches). However, its load capacity is lower, which can be problematic for heavy items.
The shallower shelf depth also limits the size of shelves, which can be inconvenient for standard binders or large books. Oxberg is well suited for light objects, photos, or decorative items.
In summary, I find that the classic BILLY shelves with a depth of 28cm (11 inches) and a height of 202cm (80 inches) will likely remain my main favorite, combined with shorter units for more flexibility and a lighter visual effect.
The Oxberg version sounds interesting for really narrow spaces, but I plan to use it more as a complement. Thanks also for the tips on stability with doors and sliding doors – I will take that into account during the planning.
Does anyone have additional suggestions on how to make BILLY shelves appear visually lighter in small rooms without immediately resorting to glass doors?

For a light and airy look, white shelves with open compartments are ideal. Light colors make small rooms appear larger.
You can also create some space between the shelving and the wall to cast shadows, which adds to the sense of airiness.
Using baskets or boxes in the shelves can help prevent clutter while keeping the appearance clean and organized.

In addition to angel’s tips: If you don’t want glass doors, you can also hang fabric panels or curtains in front of the shelves. This creates a softer look and visually reduces the massive appearance.
Another tip is to place the shelves directly on the floor without a base or plinth, as this makes them appear less bulky than if they stand on legs.

Thank you very much for the concentrated expertise and helpful tips! I now have a clear idea of how to arrange and use the shelves.
In particular, the combination of classic models and Oxberg for niches makes sense.
I will incorporate the lighting ideas and the suggestion with baskets to make the overall look more inviting and spacious.
If anyone has further suggestions, please feel free to share.
