Hello everyone,
I am looking for recommendations for IKEA Billy bookcases that work especially well in small rooms. My room is quite small, so deep or wide models are not really an option because they take up too much space. Flexible shelves that could also fit well into small niches or corners would be important.
I’m particularly interested in which models you recommend for similarly tight spaces, what dimensions work best, and whether there are versions with special features like sliding doors or built-in drawers that make the most of the available space.
Also, I would like to know if height plays a role in small rooms or if it is generally better to choose shallow shelves. Thanks in advance for your advice!

A height of 202cm (79.5 inches) fits well with a room height of 230cm (90.5 inches), making very efficient use of the wall space.
For doors in Billy models, it is better to choose versions with hinged doors; the hinges are sturdy and can withstand frequent opening.

BILLY units with a depth of 28cm (11 inches) and a height of 106cm (42 inches) take up little space.
The doors are sturdy, but they require clearance to open. Sliding doors are better when there is limited space in front, but they are rare.
Corners can be fitted with BILLY corner solutions.

Thank you for the feedback so far!
One more question: What do you think of the BILLY Oxberg series? Are the narrower shelves suitable for small rooms? The depth is often stated as 20 cm (8 inches), which sounds very appealing for small floor plans, but how about the stability and storage capacity?

What do you think about the BILLY-Oxberg series? Are the narrower shelves suitable for small rooms as well? The BILLY-Oxberg series is good for very small spaces; the 20 cm depth (8 inches) saves a lot of room. However, this series offers less storage volume and may have stability issues with heavy books or decorations.
It is ideal for lighter items or as an addition in small areas, but less suitable for main storage.
The BILLY Oxberg models are popular for small rooms and tight spaces. Their shallower depth allows placement in narrow areas as well as in corridors or alcoves.
Stability is indeed an important consideration, especially for shelves with heavier loads. Therefore, I recommend not overloading the shelves or, if necessary, using wall fasteners and additional shelves to reinforce them.

I think BILLY-Oxberg is one of those 'placebo shelves' for small rooms 😄 – super slim and looks perfect on paper, but you shouldn’t overload it. Keeping that in mind, it’s perfect because it doesn’t immediately take up the whole space.
Small but neat shelves, just right for trying to create order with limited space. And hey, if it tips over, just secure it to the wall! 😉
