Hello everyone,

I am planning to redecorate my daughter’s bedroom and am particularly interested in the IKEA Billy shelving systems. Since there is quite a large selection, I would like to discuss the following question here: Which Billy models are especially suitable for children’s rooms, considering safety, flexibility for toys and books, as well as an attractive appearance? It would also be very relevant for me to know if certain versions are more child-friendly, for example with soft-close doors or rounded edges, and which dimensions or accessories are recommended to make the shelves both child-appropriate and durable.

I would be very happy to receive recommendations and possibly hear about experiences with the different versions!

Hello Plokla,

your concern is very reasonable, setting up the children’s room with suitable furniture that is safe and functional. The various Billy bookshelf models mainly differ in height, width, and features. For children’s rooms, lower versions of about 106 cm (42 inches) in height are often recommended so that children can easily reach their books and toys and won’t injure themselves if they climb.

Many parents choose models with doors to keep the room tidy. The Billy cabinet doors have magnetic closures, but unfortunately, they do not have a soft-close feature. If that is important, you would either need to retrofit it yourself or opt for alternative shelving systems. Fortunately, the edges on the Billy units are rounded, which is good for safety.

Additionally, I recommend always securing the shelf to the wall to prevent tipping hazards—especially important for active children. Accessories like shelves and storage boxes for better organization can make the setup significantly more practical. Hope this helps!

The Billy shelves with a width of 80 cm (31.5 inches) and a height of 106 cm (41.7 inches) are the most suitable. They are relatively compact and stable. Doors are only recommended if you have children who like to pull everything out. Always secure them to the wall.

I’d like to add a brief overview of important points to consider when using the Billy bookshelf for a children’s room:

1. Choose the right size: 106 cm (42 inches) height is ideal, as it allows children to easily reach everything. Models with a height of 202 cm (79 inches) are often too tall for kids.

2. Safety: It is essential to securely attach the shelves to the wall to prevent tipping. Also, look for rounded edges, which the Billy bookshelf provides.

3. Doors or open shelves: For younger children, doors can help prevent them from pulling out too much at once. For older children, open shelves are often more practical, enabling independent access.

4. Flexibility: The adjustable shelves allow customization to fit toys of various sizes.

5. Material: Billy is made of particleboard with a melamine finish, which is easy to clean but should be protected from moisture and heavy wear.

6. Accessories: Baskets, boxes, and organization systems complement the shelf well.

In summary: Smaller Billy models with at least two adjustable shelves, preferably with doors for better organization and securely attached to the wall, work great for children’s rooms. If you’re interested, I’d be happy to provide tips on assembly and mounting.

That is absolutely correct. It should also be noted that the load capacity of the shelves in Billy is about 30 kg (66 lbs), which is usually sufficient for books and toys. However, the standard doors close quite loudly, which can be disturbing during quiet times. If this is a concern, it’s worth considering soft-close hinges from third-party suppliers or switching to alternatives.

Additionally, I recommend the white version for children’s rooms, as it is the most versatile and shows minor signs of wear less visibly. For very young children or babies, the Billy Kallax shelves are sometimes more suitable because they are deeper and more robust and are often used as play furniture.

All shelves should be securely fixed to the wall; IKEA provides appropriate safety fittings.

Using the Billy unit with doors and a high back panel helps to prevent dust and clutter. A height of 106 cm (42 inches) is suitable for toddlers. It does not have soft-close hinges, but dampers can be retrofitted. Wall mounting is mandatory.
