mieltonHello everyone,
I am currently planning the assembly of an IKEA Metod kitchen island and am looking for proven installation tips that are especially helpful when putting together these kitchen units. The Metod island will be freestanding in my kitchen, which makes the assembly somewhat more complex than with standard kitchen base units. Important are tips on stabilizing the island, precisely aligning the modules, and properly attaching the countertop and appliances.
Are there any experiences with the method of connecting the carcasses to each other, special tools that make the assembly easier, or tricks to avoid common fitting problems?
I am looking forward to many suggestions and also to typical pitfalls that should definitely be avoided when assembling a Metod kitchen island.

Mielton, your question is very detailed and shows that you are taking the construction seriously. I built my Metod island myself last year and can tell you that patience is the most important factor.
One tip that will definitely help you: take plenty of time before each step before you start screwing anything down. Especially with the cabinet connections, I first assembled everything loosely and checked multiple times to make sure everything fits and is perfectly aligned.
Also, a spirit level app on my smartphone proved to be indispensable because I had to level the modules very precisely so the countertop would sit flush later on.
If you have someone to stabilize the modules while you screw them together, everything goes much more smoothly.

Additional advice: I recommend a systematic approach when assembling the Metod kitchen island. Ideally, start by assembling the individual base cabinets without the back panels. Then connect the modules using the supplied corner connectors. It is crucial to first tighten the connections by hand to allow adjustments in case something does not fit perfectly.
For the island’s stability, it is important that all feet are precisely adjusted so that no module wobbles. Adjustable feet are recommended, even though IKEA usually supplies these by default.
To secure the countertop to the island, special countertop fasteners should be used. These ensure a secure hold and prevent the countertop from shifting later on. Important: the countertop and cabinet carcasses should be aligned with millimeter accuracy before final fixation to avoid gaps.
As for tools, a cordless screwdriver with torque control, a spirit level, a tape measure, and a rubber mallet should definitely be included in your toolkit.

Mielton, I also had to do some puzzle-solving with my Metod island before everything fit together 😅
My tip: You should install the back panels only at the very end, especially if you want to fix the island at baseboard height. Otherwise, it’s easy to get misaligned when adjusting all the modules.
To stabilize everything, I organized a small helper team – doing it alone didn’t work well for me. And be sure to tighten all screws only by hand at first, until everything is properly aligned.
Fun fact: A rubber mallet is invaluable when you need to gently tap a module into place without causing scratches.
Good luck – it’s going to look really great in the end!
