Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble the Ikea Brimnes series, specifically a three-part wardrobe unit with drawers and doors. Having worked with Ikea furniture several times before, I know that sometimes assembly can be completed in just a few steps, but often certain assembly stages are particularly critical to ensure stability and functionality.

Therefore, I have a specific question for the community: Which assembly steps are especially important when building the Ikea Brimnes to avoid future problems such as loose doors, stiff drawers, or warping? Are there particular points to pay close attention to, for example, fastening the back panels, aligning the doors, or tightening the drawer slides?

I look forward to your experiences and tips, ideally with advice on mistakes to avoid and how to make the assembly as efficient and durable as possible.

Based on my experience, the most important assembly steps when building Ikea Brimnes are:

- Carefully aligning and securing the side panels before attaching the back panel. This prevents later distortion.
- Installing and fixing the back panel completely and evenly, as it provides essential lateral stability to the cabinet elements.
- Correctly installing the drawer runners and tightening all screws sufficiently to avoid drawer operation problems.
- Precisely aligning the doors and tightening the hinges in multiple stages to prevent wobbling or misalignment.

A common mistake is tightening the screws too early or too tightly before all parts are properly positioned, which makes adjustments difficult. Ignoring the instructions for inserting plywood or hardboard panels for the back often causes problems as well.

Important are:

- Install the back panel flush and do not leave screws too loose.
- Adjust the doors carefully to avoid them sticking.
- Mount drawer slides perfectly straight.

Otherwise, everything will wobble later or operate with difficulty.

A few practical tips for assembling the Ikea Brimnes, focusing on especially important assembly steps:

1. Preparation: Lay out all parts and screws clearly and carefully review the instructions. The back panels are often underestimated, but without them, the entire structure becomes unstable.

2. Align side panels: Make sure the side panels are positioned at a perfect right angle before attaching the back panel. A spirit level or a carpenter’s square can be helpful here.

3. Attach back panel: The Brimnes back panel is made of thin hardboard – it should be fully secured to the cabinet frame to prevent the unit from twisting later. Also use a hammer and small nails if screws alone are not sufficient.

4. Drawer runners: Proper installation is key. If the material is very hard, it helps to carefully pre-drill the runner holes with the supplied screws and avoid tightening the screws too much.

5. Hang the doors: Hinges are adjustable. Use these adjustments to align the doors perfectly – this prevents problems like uneven gaps or scraping later on.

6. Check fasteners: After assembly, it’s a good idea to double-check all connections to ensure they are securely tightened.

If these steps are followed carefully, nothing stands in the way of a stable and functional Brimnes setup.

When assembling the Ikea Brimnes, the most important aspects are the stability of the back panel and the precise adjustment of the doors and drawers.

I fully agree. Installing the back panel at an angle causes tension, which can lead to functional problems later on. Therefore, it is recommended to tighten the screws gradually, step by step, rather than all at once.

This step is also crucial – otherwise, the entire structure can become misaligned.

Hey everyone,

I agree with the previous commenters but want to add a point that is often underestimated: the assembly sequence.

If you attach the back panel completely first, it might be harder to access the screw holes for drawer slides or door hinges. My advice is to fasten the main frame enough so that it is stable but leave the back panel loose until the drawer runners and hinges are installed. Then, tighten the back panel and make the final adjustments.

And yes, it might seem minor – but take your time to adjust the doors! A little patience pays off later to prevent doors from sticking or hanging crookedly. This really saved me some stress.

Good luck with the assembly! Once you’ve done it, Brimnes really looks great and lasts a long time 😉
