Hello everyone,

I would like to start a discussion about which assembly steps are especially important for the safe installation of Ikea Metod cabinets. I plan to install several of these cabinets in my kitchen and want to make sure from the very beginning that everything is stable and correctly assembled to avoid any risks.

I’m interested in details such as the proper way to secure the cabinets to the wall, aligning the units, handling the fixing hardware, as well as any tips on preparation or special tools that might make a difference. It would be great if those with experience could also point out common mistakes to avoid.

How important do you consider strictly following the instructions compared to pragmatic solutions? Are there steps that have proven to be particularly critical?

Looking forward to your well-informed opinions and advice!

First, check the wall: is it stable and level? This is important.
Always align the cabinet horizontally and vertically.
Tighten all anchors and screws securely.
Follow the instructions step by step; otherwise, it can result in problems and safety risks.

First of all, it should be emphasized that for Ikea Metod cabinets, wall mounting is the most important safety factor. This is especially essential for tall and heavy units, which must be properly secured to stable load-bearing walls. When mounting on drywall, appropriate heavy-duty anchors must be used.

The assembly itself consists of several essential steps:

- Inspecting and preparing the wall (material, flatness, load-bearing capacity)
- Sorting and checking all parts according to the instruction manual
- Carefully inserting plugs and screws into the designated drill holes
- Assembling the base frames, including leveling with a spirit level to ensure flatness
- Securing the cabinets to each other using the supplied connecting brackets
- Vertically aligning the fronts using the adjustment screws to prevent later issues caused by misaligned doors or drawers

Following the assembly instructions is generally essential for Ikea kits, as the components are precisely designed to work together.

Finally, I would like to point out a common mistake: neglecting the wall mounting or simply resting the tall Metod cabinet units on the floor is dangerous, as they can tip over.

Are the planned cabinet sizes the standard 60cm (24 inches) width or modular extensions? Requirements often differ depending on the size.

That’s exactly my point: many people tend to overdo wall fastening. You could almost say they’re building a bunker. But seriously, if the cabinet is well joined, such meticulous wall anchoring is often overkill.

I’ve personally placed cabinets just on the floor, connected the side panels to each other, and they were perfectly stable. The wall acts more as a backup, in my opinion. Maybe I’m wrong, but I often think too much securing creates a vicious circle of effort versus benefit.

Also: obsessing over the instructions feels like something for those who are afraid to screw things together. I take a more pragmatic approach. The main thing is stability and the ability to still adjust everything. Those who strictly follow instructions often end up slower than someone with a bit of intuition.

I’m curious if anyone can relate to this kind of “free spirit” approach.

It may be true that in simple cases cabinets do not immediately tip over and can stand without wall anchoring. However, a Metod kitchen cabinet is designed for everyday use. Safety is the top priority, especially in households with children or in rental properties where there is higher traffic.

Assembly according to standards with appropriate wall anchoring prevents accidents and ensures the longevity of the construction.

Therefore, securing the cabinets to the wall should be considered mandatory rather than optional. Aligning the units with a spirit level is not an excessive effort but essential for the proper functioning of doors and drawers.

Another important point is using the supplied connecting screws to securely link the cabinets and prevent shifting. These details are often decisive for a safe and durable installation.

Taking shortcuts in this area risks damage and, above all, safety.
