Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble several Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and am wondering which assembly screws are best suited for this. Since the construction is so modular, there are different types of connections – from the original cam locks and dowels to alternative screws. I am particularly interested in the stability and durability of the joints, but also whether there are specific recommendations regarding the material, diameter, or length of the screws used.

Maybe some of you have experience with using other types of screws (e.g., chipboard screws, furniture connector screws, or flat-head screws) with Metod or know of common issues when deviating from the standard fasteners.

I would appreciate as many concrete tips as possible – including what to watch out for during assembly to ensure everything is really tight and nothing wobbles. Thanks in advance!

For Ikea Metod cabinets, it is best to use the original knock-in nuts and cam locks. These fit precisely and provide a stable connection.

Alternatives are chipboard screws with a 4mm (0.16 inch) diameter and a length of approximately 30-40mm (1.2-1.6 inches), but the screws must be properly pre-drilled to avoid splitting the wood.

A systematic answer to the question “Which mounting screws are best suited for Ikea Metod cabinets?” includes several points:

- Original fittings: Ikea mostly uses metal cam locks with matching knock-in nuts that are perfectly matched to the chipboard. They provide high stability and are easy to assemble.

- If you want to deviate from Ikea’s recommendation: chipboard screws (also called wood screws) with a diameter of 4 mm (0.16 inches) and a length of about 30 to 40 mm (1.2 to 1.6 inches) are a proven alternative. It is important to drill a pilot hole before screwing, about 75% of the screw diameter, to prevent the chipboard from splitting.

- Material & quality: stainless steel or nickel-plated screws increase durability, especially in kitchen environments with moisture.

- Assembly tip: screws should not be tightened too much, as this can cause the chipboard to crack.

Summary: For stability and safety, stick with the original mounting fittings. For those seeking customization or needing replacements, high-quality chipboard screws with pre-drilling are a practical solution.

That may be true, but I wonder if all those original 'designer fittings' are really necessary. Ikea Metod is a mass-produced system – so why not simply use regular chipboard screws?

Those who want to take the system completely apart and reassemble it might appreciate the cam locks, but for everyday use, a good-quality screw works just as well, maybe even better if you want to compress the material more tightly.

It’s also worth considering whether the assembly fittings are preferred simply because Ikea wants to earn more through accessories.

Of course, you lose some flexibility when disassembling, but the question is: how often do you really do that? For a fixed cabinet, a simple screw can be sufficient if it’s installed correctly.

The original fittings are not just designer gimmicks; they follow a proven principle for furniture construction using MDF and particleboard materials. Cam locks and insert nuts distribute the load over a larger area and prevent the wood-based panels from splitting.

That is indeed one of the main advantages – they allow easy disassembly without damaging the screws.

For direct mounting into particleboards, especially with heavy kitchen cabinets like Metod, particleboard screws tend to be more problematic since they can tear out if overtightened.

Conclusion: For a durable, load-bearing, and demountable connection, original mounting fittings are recommended. Other screws can be a cheaper alternative but carry a higher risk of material damage and, consequently, instability.
