Hello everyone, I am currently facing an issue where the doors of my IKEA Hemnes wardrobe do not close properly. Specifically, when I close the doors, they either remain slightly open or do not align flush with the frame, which creates noticeable resistance when closing. I have already checked the hinges; they are not loose and all screws are tight, but the adjustment doesn’t seem to be quite right. I am especially interested in understanding what typically causes this issue—whether it could be due to the material (such as warping from moisture or twisted doors) or if it can be quickly fixed through hinge adjustments. Does anyone have experience with this or can offer advice on which hinge adjustment options I should check to ensure the doors close smoothly? Thanks in advance.

The issue you described with the HEMNES cabinet doors often stems from slight misalignments of the insert or hinge components. These hinges typically allow adjustments in three directions:
- Height adjustment via screws on the mounting bracket
- Lateral adjustment to align the gap
- Depth adjustment to make the door flush with the cabinet body

It is recommended to first check the lateral adjustment, which usually involves small adjustment screws that can be turned with a Phillips screwdriver or an Allen key. A warped door panel caused by moisture can also be a factor, which can be verified by carefully measuring the diagonals. If the doors are warped, further hinge adjustments will have limited effectiveness. One tip: before making adjustments, thoroughly clean the hinges from dust and grease to ensure smooth operation of the mechanism.

First, check the screws on the hinges of the HEMNES wardrobe doors. Tighten them if necessary. Then adjust the screws for the lateral and horizontal alignment. Make sure the doors are not warped due to excessive moisture.

I have encountered and thoroughly investigated this issue several times with HEMNES cabinets. It is important to proceed systematically:

1. Check the door weight: Has anything accumulated inside the cabinets in the meantime that could be causing the door panel to sag?
2. Examine the hinges carefully: HEMNES uses a sliding system with three adjustment options – vertical, horizontal (sideways), and depth. When adjusting horizontally, it is important to be delicate in order to minimize the gap without the door sticking.
3. Measure factory drill holes/attachment points: Sometimes installed parts do not fit perfectly if the screw holes are slightly offset.
4. Material warping in wood or wood veneer: HEMNES is partly made of solid wood and veneered MDF panels. Moisture can cause tension, which might be alleviated by controlling the room climate.

Do you have the option to remove the doors and adjust them individually? This often allows for more precise hinge adjustments. A gentle tap on the door can also shift its position, but be careful not to cause any damage.

That is a very good tip, thank you. I have now measured the diagonals of the door with a tape measure, and indeed they differ by a few millimeters, which indicates a slight warping.

Removing the doors is not a problem, but I have hesitated so far because I wasn’t sure if screw sleeves or special clips could be damaged in the process. Can you confirm that the HEMNES doors can be easily taken off and rehung without stressing the material or damaging the mechanism?

Also, I would be interested to know if there are common pitfalls to watch out for when remounting the doors.

Great that you’ve already noticed the warping! 😊

I once removed and reinstalled the doors on my HEMNES – it works without any issues! Just carefully lift the clips on the hinge upward, and the door will slide off. When rehanging, make sure to align with the correct locking points; these are quite sturdy, and you’ll hear a clear click.

Be careful not to use too much force, as the plastic parts could break. So it’s better to proceed gently. After reinstalling, I completely readjusted the screws until everything closed properly. Patience really pays off!
