Hello everyone,

I have noticed for some time that the shelves of my BILLY bookcase are warping quite noticeably. In particular, the middle section seems to be sagging, which not only looks unattractive but also affects stability. The bookcase is freestanding, not fixed to a wall, and it is loaded with various books and decorations. The shelves are made of particleboard, as is typical for BILLY, and I have been using the bookcase for about 2 years.

My question is: what can I do if BILLY shelves start to warp? Are there practical solutions to prevent or fix sagging without having to replace the entire shelving unit? Are there any special reinforcements or guidelines for proper loading? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

If the BILLY shelves warp, adding an additional support strip underneath the shelf often helps. Alternatively, a thicker board can be used. Even load distribution should also be considered.

Oh yes, I know that annoying warping of the BILLY shelves all too well! 🙈 I had the same issue, especially with the shelves in the middle, because heavy books tend to put their weight right there. My tip: try placing a thin plywood board underneath or use small metal brackets as support at the back, on the wall side. That helps a lot! It also balances the shelf when you distribute the books evenly. And hey, this way your BILLY becomes a real hero among shelves! 😉

The deformation of the shelves in BILLY units is often caused by overloading or uneven weight distribution. The particle board used has a limited load-bearing capacity.

This recommendation is effective. Proper reinforcement with an additional strip (wood or metal) or a thin plywood panel as a support can significantly increase the load capacity. Additionally, the load should be distributed as evenly as possible, and heavier items should be placed closer to the wall side to minimize bending.

Hello Milako,

I understand your concern well, as the issue of BILLY shelves warping is quite common. Here are some more detailed tips:

First, the load on the shelves is crucial. The more evenly you distribute the weight, the less the particleboard will sag. For bookcases, for example, it is advisable to place heavy books as close as possible to the shelf frame and the back panel to reduce bending stress.

I can confirm this, as follows: Screw a wooden strip (e.g., a narrow laminated wood strip 20x30 mm (0.8x1.2 inches)) underneath the shelves along the front edge. This provides enough stability without adding much weight or visible changes.

If the bookshelf is placed against a wall, brackets or small supports at the back can help. For freestanding shelves, a metal bracket fixed underneath can also help stabilize the shelves against sagging.

I hope this helps. 🙂 If you have any questions about materials or fastening options, feel free to ask!
