ᐅ What tips are there to make inserting the shelves in BILLY easier?

SarjoHello everyone,
I am currently working on installing the shelves in my IKEA BILLY bookcase and am looking for tips or tricks to make this process easier. Although the holes for the individual shelves are pre-drilled, I notice that when fine-tuning the shelf or inserting the dowels and shelves themselves, it can sometimes be tricky—especially if the angle is slightly off or the dowels don’t fit perfectly.
I am mainly interested in practical advice on how to better adjust the shelves, whether there are any tools that simplify the installation, or if there is a recommended sequence to follow. Any small tips for assembly or placing the shelves would also be very helpful.
Who has experience with this and can suggest ways to improve the process? Thanks in advance!

Hello Sarjo,
I can really understand how you’re feeling. The BILLY shelves are practical, but sometimes tricky to assemble. My first tip is to insert the dowels into the holes before attaching the shelf board. It often helps to lightly coat the dowels with some wax or soap – this makes it easier for them to slide into the holes and for the shelf to be placed more smoothly.
Another trick is to clean or deburr the holes and dowels before inserting them, in case there are small wood chips or fibers that could make the assembly more difficult. You can quickly do this with some fine sandpaper.
Also, I find it helpful to start by positioning the shelf boards at a slight angle, then press them in at an angle while gently wiggling them instead of pushing them straight in. This helps prevent the dowels from getting stuck.
What is the thickness of your shelves? For thicker boards, it can sometimes help to slightly adjust the drill holes – but of course, be careful when doing this. If you like, I can explain how to do this properly.
I hope this helps you so far!

I’d like to give you the following tip: Take your time, get comfortable, and bring a good mood with you. 🙂 Assembling a BILLY shelf can be quite frustrating if you rush.
My secret tip: Don’t just insert the shelves dry—slightly moisten the dowels with a damp cloth so they basically slide in more easily. Kind of like a little spa treatment for your shelf 😉
And if it just won’t fit, try changing the order of the shelves. Sometimes it makes a difference whether you work from top to bottom or vice versa. You don’t want any “shelf stress” 😉
PS: Wearing gloves can also help, especially if you tend to handle fiddly parts too early.
Good luck, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Honestly, I often wonder if all the effort put into these BILLY shelves is a bit over the top. They do have their advantages, yes, but inserting the shelves feels like an unnecessary test of patience to me. IKEA could definitely improve this.
I would also recommend pre-drilling the shelf slightly if the wood is too hard. Of course, you have to be careful with this, or the shelves may end up sitting crooked. But from my point of view, using an extra tool is acceptable if it saves you from fiddling around endlessly.
batabe schrieb:I find that interesting—I haven’t tried it before, and it actually sounds quite practical. On the other hand, this wouldn’t be necessary if the holes and dowels weren’t so exact and, in my opinion, not tolerant enough. But that’s just a side note.

To optimize the installation of shelves in IKEA BILLY bookcases, I recommend the following structured approach:
1. Check the dowels and holes: Ensure that dowels and holes are free of dust and wood chips.
2. Use a lubricating agent: Applying a thin layer of wax, such as beeswax, improves the sliding ability of the dowels in the holes, making the installation easier.
3. Positioning the shelves: Initially insert the shelf at an angle rather than directly at a right angle, then gently press and swivel the shelf into the supports. This method reduces the required force and minimizes the risk of damage.
4. Assembly order: Start from the bottom and work upward to keep the unit more stable and avoid wood bending.
A general note: Do not use excessive force when inserting; this can cause damage. If the fit is still tight despite following these steps, check the material tolerances and consider asking the retailer about a potential defective part.
This procedure is supported by various guides and years of user experience.
