Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into installation errors with IKEA Billy bookcases and would like to start a discussion about which mistakes occur most frequently and why these happen particularly with the Billy series.

You often hear about uneven shelves, unstable connector joints, and problems with the dowels. However, I am also interested in technical details, such as incorrect drilling or wrong screw assignments, which are often overlooked.

Has anyone systematically gathered experience regarding which errors are most common and problematic? Any tips on how to avoid these issues would also be very helpful.

Looking forward to your answers!

The most common assembly mistakes with the Billy bookshelf often result from incorrect drilling and improper alignment of dowels and screws.

A particularly frequent error is twisting the drill holes due to excessive pressure when pre-drilling or screwing in directly without pre-drilling. This leads to a lack of stability and unevenly positioned shelves.

Mounting the back panel also often causes issues when it is not precisely centered – this significantly affects the overall stability.

Additionally, the connecting fittings (the small metal brackets) are often improperly positioned or mounted too loosely, which subsequently causes wobbling.

Tilted shelves are common because the dowels are not properly seated.

Some tighten them too much, others too loosely. Both cause issues.

I would like to provide a brief, structured overview of common mistakes and how to avoid them:

1. Incorrect alignment of anchors and screws: Often, the anchor holes are drilled too deep or at an angle. Tip: Use a drill guide or stop collar to maintain the correct angle.

2. Uneven shelves: This is often caused by drill holes in the shelf and side panels not lining up precisely. It is important to carefully measure each step and make adjustments by millimeters if necessary.

3. Back panel attached too loosely: This significantly reduces stability. Tip: Screw the back panel strips evenly and with firm pressure.

4. Missing or incorrect use of connectors: Some use the wrong screws or skip fittings altogether, which makes the shelf unit less stable.

Summary: Precise drilling, using the right parts, and properly aligning the back panel are the key points.

That’s exactly what I suspected. Is there a kind of “typical error,” a recurring pattern behind all these mistakes? Do you think this is mainly due to the user, or could it also be partly caused by the assembly instructions or even some aspects of the design?

I’m interested to know if the manufacturer has any weak points here that contribute to the problem.

A common mistake is actually the imprecise alignment of the drill holes, which is often due to user error. However, Billy’s assembly concept is very minimalist and still requires precise work.

The construction manual is clear but could be more detailed in some steps, especially regarding the rear panel installation and the alignment of the shelves.

Regarding the parts: The dowels are relatively thin, so twisting or loosening can occur quickly. IKEA could improve this to reduce the error rate.
